In Wyoming what we usually found in a deep producing well was shale laden with raw crude under pressure. Sometimes we would encounter layers of granite that only a diamond studded bit could penetrate at a few feet per hour. In Utah we drilled through layers of salt that were moving and getting us stuck on our way to the total depth target zone. We never encountered anything resembling ancient life even in core barrel samples.
