Should I buy this 06 Busa

Hey everyone I’m here for the first time to ask if you can across an untouched 06 Busa with 13k miles for $5500 would you buy it and what should you look for when doing a test ride.

This is a very difficult question for anyone to answer.....as I don't know your level of motorcycle knowledge is, I could/might inadvertently come across as condescending.

However there are lots of things to look for....

Maintenance-you can ask if there are any records and if not, a general look over of the bike will tell you lots...if it looks "shabby" and unkept chances are the maintenance was not done.
Check the oil
Check for leaks and weeps in the suspension and look under the fairings at the engine.
Look at the oil drain plug to see if it is rounded off or weeping
Check the chain to see if it has been adjusted or cleaned/oil
Open up the gas cap and look inside for any rust
look around the back of the body work looking for rubber "spray" to see if it has had a lifetime of burnouts

When test riding, check brakes, check tracking/any shimmying as it goes down the road, check the acceleration (smooth/bogging), hit a few light bumps and see if it unsettles or makes any weird noises.

All this is to avoid buying someone else's problems and sour you of the bike....

One year ago I bought a perfect, bone stock 05 Hayabusa with 800 miles for 10k. Well, it did have upgraded Brimbo masters and calipers. I probably could have gotten a Gen 2 with more miles for a little more or maybe even 10K. It was too perfect to pass up. $5500 sounds like a fair price though with 13k miles IMHO.

best would be to meet the bike - together with its owner - at a suzuki-shop where their best mechanic looks for that bike
and tell you what should have been done next 500 miles or so.

if you have no (zero) knowledge about gen1 busas
and no knowledge at all how to repair / maintain a bike / the busa
let it be !

the following costs can/will empty your purse in a second if you have to put the busa for every issue to the shop.

if this busa has to be it - get the sum of 5500 back at home in the piggy bank - you could need that money for repairs etc.

So I actually am the lead tech at this dealership and have bein turning wrenchs professionally for 14 years and many before that. I know about most of the Busa issues like the trans, radiator fan and so on but what I’m looking for is the things no one talks about and on the 06 model year. There’s a difference in knowing a motorcycle and owning that bike for years if that makes since. I know the entire back story to this bike and other than needing cush rubbers in the rear wheel this bike is very clean and very stock. The young guy who originally bought it had his mom co-sign with him well he started good time around and mom took the bike parked it in the garage and continued to make the payments until it was payed off and she got tired of it taking up space so she sold it to my dealership for next to nothing.

Now we all know your skill and knowledge level, we were only guessing before and if you were to look at some other threads posing the same question you did, you would find many of those people were very new to motorcycling...

Yea I guess I should have mentioned I’m the lead tech at the dealership the bike got sold to. I have gave the bike a decent looking at and so far just the rear Cush rubbers need replaced. I’m going to ride it next week and I think I can easily get the bike for 5 or maybe 4500 which to me seems like a pretty good deal for a bike like this with only 13000 miles

That’s the kinda response I’m looking for. I’m the lead tech at this dealer and while I’ve worked on a few first gens more on the others you still just don’t see them in a shop all the time which typically means there a good reliable unit if taken care of properly which I pretty much knew already but so yea I’m going to try for 4500 and no more then 5 after the bs fees cause I know what they got In it. Either way it’s a clean un touched bike and I’ve always wanted a turbo bike so…… what better way lol thanks for the response

2 years ago (or so) there was a pic of a gen2 busa here at the org with 286 k miles

13 k miles means the 1st inspection (24 k km) is coming up soon - but thats all.

watch the bike how clean it is - no mud / dust anywhere - then it is ok
tires ok? a new chainset can be necessary.

but what am i talking about - you as a tech leader should know

ok one thing - clutch springs - did the preowner put in some strongers than original?
and did he mount the bracket over the sleeve?
if not , mount it when bought the busa - otherwise the danger of a broken / cracked sprocket cover is damn high.

Honestly I'd hammer the poop out of it (if you are a good rider and know how bikes should perform) gen 1's can have 2nd gear issues (mine never did) and if it does then you are splitting the case and need to be mechanically incline or pay someone.

That’s the kinda response I’m looking for. I’m the lead tech at this dealer and while I’ve worked on a few first gens more on the others you still just don’t see them in a shop all the time which typically means there a good reliable unit if taken care of properly which I pretty much knew already but so yea I’m going to try for 4500 and no more then 5 after the bs fees cause I know what they got In it. Hi. To me even $4,500.00 is high I got my 1999 6 yrs ago for $2,500.00. But then again I have spent over $70,000.00 more on it to make it the bike I want. An 800+HP LSR/street bike.

Splitting the cases is opportunity for a Gen 2 crank and counterbalance removal.

In this economy everyone's used vehicle is priced like gold. Whereas just a few year ago sport bikes were cheaper in real dollars than in 2000, new and used bikes have undergone a significant adjustment for inflation. In that vein, today I see many ads for similar bikes priced at nine grand plus. Considering this is a nice bike that does have the "sat for a long time" concerns to be looked over, that is a good price that still reflects the deal the dealership received on it.
