Safety: Protective Riding Gear

When it gets too hot I usually pull out my 'bionic suit'.  Mine is made by Fox Racing, but Alpinestars has one too, and it looks better!  Basically it's old school football jersey mesh with all the 'armour' built into it.  The protection is tougher than my Icon Leather jacket.  It's got hard plastic and padding in all the impact areas and chest and back protection.  Plus if you want to look like a squid, you can put a large t-shirt on over it!  They are CE certified too!

This actually looks like something cool (as in temperature)enough to wear. What's the cost, please?
I found the price, not too bad. Now this I could wear when it hits 100, which is most of the spring and summer in Texas. There is no way in hell that I would wear one of those full leather suits! Sweating like a pig kind of takes the point out of the ride, doesn't it?

I've had 3 accidents in 30 years. Hair fractured a lower leg once. Mostly got a little road rash and some big bruises. Lost about half of a side of my helmet on one. I've literally walked away from them all. Helmet, gloves, boots, and a T shirt for every one.

Alright now that I have the head and torso covered.  What about pants?  Must they be leather?  What about the fiber pants or the pants that look like jeans with extra protection?  And are full racing boots a must or can I wear a motorcycle shoes?  And finally is the web the best place to shop for these items (excluding the helmet)?  Thanks for your help.  We'll have me geared up before you know it.
Start by asking yourself how much protection do you want for your body in general.

From personal experience, I've had stones bounce up from trucks/the highway and hit me in the shin. If I wasn't wearing boots designed for biking I could've sustained a nasty injury.

I've also lowsided a bike, my foot was trapped underneath, and it wore a hole in the steel toecap of my boot (foot was not hurt.)

Recognize the possibility that you will lowside, highside, or get taken out by a blind/drunk cage driver. Then think about what it's worth to maximize your protection.

You'll hear stories from people about how they've ridden for years with minimal protection, and walked away from crashes that could've maimed them. They're the lucky ones, that doesn't guarantee that you can do the same. You don't hear from the other ones who dressed the same way and had to spend time getting skin grafts or months in rehabilitation. You can't usually choose when or how you have an accident.

Like I said before, why buy the fastest production motorcycle in the world, then skimp on stuff that could save you from years of pain and suffering.

you really don't sweat as much as you would think as long as your moving... you don't wanna hit traffic on a 90+ day in full leather though... course it ain't gonna matter what your wearing at that point.. it's all gonna suck.

Yeah. I have once or twice went out without my leather jacket and gloves, but I feel naked and hate it.

Even in 100 + heat, I would wear my full leathers when I am out purposely riding aggressively on the back roads, but other than that I wear my leather riding jacket and gloves, riding jeans and my boots. Even on 100 degree days I have that mother frickin' jacket on...yes, it gets very hot and I do sweat like a pig, but I would not want to go down without it...that would take all the fun out of riding.

I think you can get the Alpinestars one from their website. I know Iron Pony used to carry them, but I can't find it on their website. Tonight's bike night there, so if I go by there, I'll see if they still carry it.

I wear this

Link here

It comes with a thinsulate-type liner that zips out and is hardpad armored in the back, shoulders, elbows, arms, etc.

It's double-layer mesh so I get a good breeze while riding. Not unbearable sitting in traffic but only a cool suit works for that.

The price is right as well for commuter riding. For serious rides I slip into my 1-piece leathers.

Thanks Man!

I just got this jacket and it's awesome and it can be converted in mesh. The whole front of the jacket is removeable

Joe Rocket also has a leather jacket that the entire front and back zips off and has mesh underneath while maintaining the protection.  The mesh is more like a textile jacket in that it lets the air go through.  Not mesh like the other pics I posted.
