You got that right. My band played for a USO Bob Hope show in Viet Nam , and about 30,000 troops were there. I could hardly play my hands were shaking so hard. Of course 99% of the crowd were holding M16s.

In my opinion, if you sing the actual notes to the song, you have a decent chance of getting it right. When you add flourishes, you risk losing the words and the song. Just my $0.02.
