Valve noise?

I have a 08 with almost 600 miles. Im not sure if im just paranoid but does anyone hear what sounds like valve noise at lower RPM around 4000 or so? Just dont know if I should be worried or not.

It's a noisy power plant. Probably nothing to worry about. If you find that it goes away after it warms up, bring it to the attention of a wrench monkey and see what they think.

I have around 2000 miles on my k8 and I have noticed the same noise myself. I was just waiting for the recall papers to arrive and make my appt. with the stealership and have them check it out while they have it.

Until then I'm adding up the miles.....

I havnt really noticed it going away after warming up. and Its not real bad but a little annoying. Are you talking about the recall papers for the ignition wire problem?

You talking about applying throttle, and hearing the valves clunk around in the engine till the rpms get higher right? Its called predetonation. Its because the engine is not designed to be under such load at 4k rpm. The rattling is cause your engine is spinning to slow for the combustion cycle to happen quick enough. That happens with manual engines. In a automatic trans engine the engine autolmaticlly spins to the optimal rpm to avoid valve chatter. It can be damaging to accelerate from such low rpm.

Solution: Ride just above the engine rpm that the knocking occurs at. Slip the clutch a little more.

No its more of a sound that I can just here better at that rpm. say if you were cruising along no acceleration i can here it the most around 4000k like I said might be a little paranoid. I know what you are talking about but it is a different sound, more like a lite chatter when cruising at low rpms. Probably have the dealership listen to it at the first service.

Its normal. You have to think about it like this. All the valves are making the exact same sound right. Its normal then. If one was tapping then you have a problem.

Dont take my word for it. Im not a mechanic, i just stayed at a holiday in. Bring it to a shop and have a specialist look at it.

I've always noticed a little clicking noise but from what I remember from my Gen1, it was there too. Doesn't get worse or better...just kinda there. I've never really worried about it since it hasn't changed in tone at all (1300 miles). Just assume that's her natural sound. If you find out different, let us know...

Another good reason to wear a helmet. Years ago I took my Katana 1100 for a quick errand without my helmet and I couldn't stand the noise from the valve train. I'd never heard it before so I wore my helmet all the time after that and the noise went away.

It is a normal noise,my 07 also did it.You will notice if you keep it on the back tire alot ,it will get louder.

Could also be cam chain rattle. Possibly the tensioner is 'in between' adjustment ticks? Hard to say...

I assumed the noise was the cam followers ticking away until the oil gets round and the components warmed up a little. Seems to me that the shims will be a little slack at first to allow for expansion when up to full operating temp.

I have nothing to add, constuctively; I don't get an irritating or alarming noise, but have a louder exhaust and always wear a helmet.

Good luck, yo.

well i just did my second oil change and bike has 2100 miles and ride it for a while and i have valve ticking noise that i did not have before oil change. rode couple of times more i can still hear it in idle or low rpm. really can not tell in high rpm since the exhaust is so loud.

any thoughts of why after oil change this happened?

A friend of mine lost a shim right after an oil change. He fired it up...we heard a slight ticking but thought nothing of it, hit the road and the first time he wound it up all hell broke loose
