The dragon claims one today

Here's a comment i cut and pasted.

The crash involved a rig (flatbed trailer) which according to witnesses, was over the center line. The victim came around a curve and the trailer was on his side of the road. Please ride and drive expecting the UNEXPECTED!! Fellow riders of the victim said he was from Tennessee.

This just pisses me off! The tractor trailers have no business on that road. They physically cannot negotiate the road without taking up MORE THAN both lanes in many of the turns. I was there just yesterday and was waved off the road by a TN trooper who was escorting a flatbed. They do that as a courtesy when they see the trucks, but they aren't up there all the time. This crap with the trucks has gotten out of hand up there and I am sick and frickin' tired of it!

I don't understand why they allow semi's on the Dragon. There is no way they can make those turns without crossing the lines. I was there in May when a truck went buy the resort pulling a mobile home. The next morning at breakfast I was talking to some guys one of them had to go off the road to miss the trailer. If you cross the lines on a bike they don't hesitate to give you a ticket. I'm not that familiar with the area but I can't believe trucks have to use that route and if there is a special reason they should have an escort.

Maybe lawmakers can use his death to ban big rigs from driving on the dragon. Seems kinda like playing russian roulette to me and they should know that. Poor guy.

What a shame. RIP Dwight Woodard. Did anyone else read a bias against bikes in the report ???

There's always going to be a bias against bikers. We are subject to more negative stereotypes than other drivers. But what if I'm up there in my Yaris and the tandem wheels of a 50,000 pound trailer roll over me in my own lane? That is no different.

For those of you who don't have first-hand knowledge of the road, check out these videos. There are many more available on YouTube...

RIP rider :please:

I'm yet to ride this road, but it's VERY high on my "bucket" list!

It's really up to each and every local resident and anyone else that frequents this road and area regularly, or even infrequently.....start a petition > get as MANY signatures on it as possible > wave it under the nose of each and every local politician (ESP. leading up to an election) and demand that they GUARANTEE that they will FIX this problem...NO ifs....NO buts....JUST FIX IT!!!!!!

A petition could be arranged to be left at Deals Gap M/cycle Resort, they surely must realise that the touring m/cycle crowd is their "bread & butter".....how many bike riders and sports car enthusiasts do you think would choose NOT to sign it!?! (...not many, and they would be rather foolish if they didn't!!)

Look at it THIS way.......the NEXT rider that dies on this road in similar circumstances could be YOU, it could be ME >>>> It could be ANY SINGLE ONE OF US!!?!! (....or worse...a GROUP of us)

Is there any local .org member/s that care enough to get this petition started, to help right a wrong that may personally affect any one of us some day.....???? ???

ps: remember....pollies ONLY take notice if a MAJORITY make enough NOISE.....stay quiet, and they'll happily keep their head "in the sand", while they keep collecting their fat paycheck!!!!!!

Terrible!!! Another problem is say if a trucked is using a gps and it says to take US 129 he may not know what the rd is like and once your in it it'd hard to turn around. We have several rds like this in wnc. It is very scary. Most sign are right as the rds start and all they normally say is truckers use caution steep winding rd......... states meed to do be imho

I can't speak for the NC side, but the TN side now has several prominent signs on US 129 leading up to the "Dragon" section. One of them specifically says last turnaround, but none of them actually require the trucks to go another way.
