Obviously the pay rate keeps the positions filled.

Come on now, think. It's not the pay rate that keeps the position filled. Its because alot of people are looking for a job and most Departments are hiring. Simple as that. And when you don't pay a person a professional pay rate that calls for for professional people, guess what you get. Alot of unprofessional people. I promise you, the pay is not what keeps the positions filled

Does that mean that I had better not pull out to pass the half mile line of trucks that are running 60 in the right lane, because before I get around some dude running 100 might want around? This means the fast lane would never be used.

I have no problem running as fast as anyone could possibly be running in the fast lane, in order to get out of the way. Wanna run 150? Cool with me! But when I am faced with getting a ticket whether I drove too slow or drove to fast, I can't win! That sucks.

As I tell all the people that I traffic stop when they start *****ing about the law. I didn't write the law, I'm simply paid to enforce it. With that being said, I'm not above the law in any shape, form or fashion either.

The problem is not the guy passing cars with a line of cars behind him, it is the tool that is going slower than the cars to the right of him who refuses to got out of the way.

Absolutely!!!! In what job field are there not unprofessional people. Thats a whole different issue with people's outlook on Police Officer's. Anything less than perfection for a cop is unacceptable. And I'm assuming that everyone posting here realizes that perfection as a human isn't possible.

I'm quessing your a defense attorney or simply love playing the devil's advocate.

Not at all... It just seems to me that the actions of the cop and the reactions of people on here to it confirm to me that we do indeed live in a Police State and that concerns me greatly....
Democracies are policed by the consent of the majority and that majority needs to stand up and say "Thus far and no further" .. Police officers are NOT above the law and they need to act accordingly... Once again I will state that this cop drove illegally and dangerously!!!

Agreed, to a point. But it is a matter of supply and demand, they will have the positions full as long as they pay enough that people will work for it. Hiring the right people is up to them. As for getting professional people, that may be a trick that money will not perform. It takes a certain type of person to be a good cop, and it's possible that there just aren't many of that type of people who would want the job at any pay. I once heard a high school guidance councilor have this discussion about teachers, and he was of the opinion that no amount of pay would fill all of the positions with GOOD teachers.

And so did the car in front of him. And your right, no one is above the law.

And New Jersey is one of the lowest paying states when it comes to Police Officer's salaries. You get what you pay for.

They're are alot of good candidates out there that would make great Police Officer's BUT they see what Police Officer's make and say, Nope, my life is worth more than peanuts. And your right about no amount of money would fill all positions with good people because some people are going to be douche bags no matter what they do or how much they're getting paid to do it. That goes for all job fields.

Not all Police Officer's have common sense but the ones that do would see the WHOLE picture being played out in front of him.

As I tell all the people that I traffic stop when they start *****ing about the law. I didn't write the law, I'm simply paid to enforce it.

Which is it? Do you have common sense about the spirit of the law, or do you just enforce the letter of the law and it's just tough luck?

This type of ambiguity is what makes it impossible to do the right thing all the time. A person can have every good intention in the world and still be strung up under one interpretation of the law or another.

Take the speed limit out of the equation all together and enforce the "drive right" law, and then we'd be on to something!
Make it a rule that if you can get close enough to a car to read it's plate, you can write the number down and have a ticket sent to him.

This whole discussion could have been avoided if this had been followed. Pay close attention to at 50 seconds in.

Okay, here's the deal. I'm driving on the freeway, minding my own business, jamming to some Godsmack, or System of a Down... I'm doing prolly 10 or so mph OVER the posted speed limit, and boom, there's a cop in my rearview mirror. He's a ways behind me, so I slow down... I don't want a ticket and all. Now I'm doing appx 3 to 4 mph over the speed limit (thinking I'm not getting a ticket for that amount) and now he's all over my a$$ tailgating and shiz like that. I can't get over to the right without slowing down even farther, or speeding up to overtake the guys in the right lane and more likely than not getting a ticket for speeding. Now someone else is in the other lane videotaping me and putting me on youtube, but chances are that 9 times out of 10, everyone else would have done the same thing. We have no video proof of anything up until the point where the cop came along, and we can make assumptions all day about what had been happening to the cop, the other driver, the governer, superman, etc all day long, but NONE of us were there, and with ONLY seeing the video that was posted, I still come away with the feeling that the officer was more in the wrong than the driver of the car he was tailgating..

Proper thing to do was get over when you had the first chance. If he was a way behind you, get over then slow down. The guy in the right lane wouldn't video tape you unless he said to himself, "hey there is a tool in the left lane about to cause a problem, let me video tape this".

How did you get in the left lane if the trafic was moving faster than you? You must have said to yourself, I am going to drive in the left lane no matter what everyone else thinks.:poke:

When did I ever say that the traffic was moving faster than me? I mentioned that I was doing 10 or so mph faster than the speed limit, I'm sure I was passing plenty of people while I was in that left lane until I saw the cop.. In the video all three lanes are moving about the same pace if I remember correctly.
Also the guy is clearly video taping the cop tailgating. Did you watch the video?

on a flip side of this....the other morning I was cruising in my 4 door with my swagger on......ok ok, I jsut dropped the kids off at school and was heading out of town for work....any way back to the story,...The speed limit was 60. I have this white explorer cruise past me..looked out of place to me.... he goes up about 4-5 car lengths and a little malibu speeds past me and is on his azz......here is where it got funny.....the Explorer blasted him with his red and blues in the back window:rofl: Guy backed off quick and slowed down and got in the left lane in front of me. I wish I had a video of it:laugh:

So it appears the officer didnt like to be tailgated and gave the guy a friendly back off notice.
