I was watching the local news channel two nights ago and saw something that caught my attention. According to KING5 NEWS there were two local guys racing on the streets near Seattle. It seems the two were best friends. While racing in a 40 mph zone at speeds of around 90 mph, according to witnesses, one lost control and was killed. His best friend who was racing with him went to jail charged with "Vehicular Homicide" and "Vehicular Assault". I heard this morning that he was now free on $100K bail. This guy is facing 7 to 10 years in the big house and coming out a felon. Not to mention the family of the dead man can sue for wrongful death and collect a substantial portion of this mans income for the rest of his life.
So before you decide to twist the throttle to race some kid on his jacked up 600 or 1000, maybe a cager etc. remember this poor bloke that will suffer for the rest of his life simply because he accepted a race with his best friend. He did nothing to contribute to the death other than being the other guy in the race. When you accept a challenge from a co-worker or friend etc. if anything goes wrong and someone is hurt or killed, you are held responsible even though you had nothing to do with the accident other than being the Other guy in the race. And don't believe for a second your buddies won't squeal like a stuck pig when quizzed by the police? They will! And you "WILL" go to jail!
I read at least one post a day about someone racing on the street. It's fun, it's exciting and most of us are guilty at some time? But I'm not sure many of us realize the possible consequencies of our actions? If you get caught by the men in blue, Racing is a sure trip to jail with your scooter impounded. The ticket is Wreckless Driving, good for four digits in fines and a trippling of your insurance if you can buy it at all.
I would hope this post may coach some of you street racers into engaging your brain in gear before putting the throttle in motion. Are the consequencies worth the adreniline rush?
