A person's attitude has a bunch to do with if they get a ticket in my book. You handled it in the right way and like I tell people.... respect gets respect... And I have had people I have stopped and intended to only give a warning to get so stupid they talked them selfs into a ticket. A person gets mouthy and out of line I tell them this " Well I was going to give you a warning but since you feel so strong about this I'm going to not give you a verbal warning like I first wanted. I'm going to give you your time in court to argue your case. Wait here and I will be right back with your ticket!" I blows them away.... Attitude and respect gets respect... You busa_boy_69 were given back the respect you gave them. I'm glad you were stopped by riders...

(GSXRFANN @ Mar. 19 2007,09:25) Good for you!! And VERY nice of the police officers. I wish all of them would take things like that into consideration. SOME of them just wanna bust your chops. And SOME of them are actually nice, careing people!

Yeah these guys were really cool. I have a lot more respect now.

(Leo @ Mar. 19 2007,09:36) There are good people in every field of work, and there are azzhats as well, glad you ran into the first kind

Good point. But I needed this cuz it seems like all I ever ran into before this were the azzhats.

(tpbio @ Mar. 19 2007,09:41) I think your attitude and the manner in which you spoke to them really made a great impact on their decision to let you off with just a warning.

Glad all ended well

Well it wasn't a put on. Those guys just treated me with respect so I returned the respect to them. And I was gonna take what was coming to me. haha. I wasn't gonna like it at all but I will man up to things when I am in the wrong.

(ibified @ Mar. 19 2007,10:11) Good deal.  Yeah they gave you one HELL of a brake there.  I'm lucky that I live in a small town where I know and am on at least friendly acquaintance with most of the police officers in town.

Hopefully, you got the names of those guys.  I'd write a letter to the police department stating how your dealing with them was very fair, friendly, and how professional they both were.  Don't go into too many details about the incident itself though - you dont want to get them in trouble for their kindness.  Hopefully you can tack them down later and maybe ride with them.
Damn man sorry to hear about your luck. But you see THAT was the type of officer I have ran into like everytime almost. Thats why it was easy for me to just make it out like ALL cops were like that. I know its hard but believe me after my ordeal I know they are out there now.

You know I thought about asking them if they would wanna go ride but I figured after the display I put on they prolly wouldn't have wanted to a whole lot. haha

(dmrowe @ Mar. 19 2007,10:20) Hell of a break!  CHP or local PD out here would not have hesitated to impound/confiscate the bike and haul you to jail!  Count your blessings and 6 Our Fathers and 6 Hail Mary's should cover the tab.
I took care of that the night I got home. Soon as I got in the garage as a matter of fact. haha

(TIMMYDUCK @ Mar. 19 2007,13:31) Good reading.

Looks like 1 point for Team Busa & 2 points for the police.

I am a gambling man, but what are the odds that you get stopped by a car with two guys that ride inside it ?
Very slim. After that night I was beginning to think it was time to plan a trip to vegas my luck seemed to be on.

(busa_boy_69 @ Mar. 19 2007,09:18) I was amazed at how down to earth and genuinly caring these guys seemed to be. I said yes sir I will and even shook his hand. They went back to the cruiser and I went the rest of the way home as he requested (at about 35 mph max though...haha.)
Great story.

I have a question though.

Would you still think those guys were "caring & down to earth" if the entire situation went the same way as it did, (by not taking you to jail or impounding the bike), but just wrote you a ticket for your speed and sent you home??
Actually believe it or not I would have. I was just impressed by the way they approached me from get go. I mean complimenting my bike and kinda joking with me BEFORE he started to tear into me about what I did just made the situation a lot better than what it normally would have been. A straight faced act like you aren't even a person type cop just ready to throw the cuffs on u before even talking to you. Consequences or not I would have walked away thinking we need more officers like that.

Be glad it wasn't a state trooper.  You know our super troopers are diks
You know actually and this is gonna sound real bad but last summer I had a real good experience with one of them. He let me go with a verbal warning for doing 91 on I-75. I just told him that I had worked a 20 hour shift at work and was just in a hurry to get home and go to bed. He let me go with a warning and just said slow it down for me cuz if u crash the bike ur not gonna make it home at all. I had forgot all about that till just now. Damn thats my second cut loose I am REALLY pushing the luck now. Of course 91 and 137 are a little different. But Ohio Highway Patrol NEVER lets u off I know what u mean.

Well I would agree with you. Like I said these officers approached me as a person and not a TROUBLE MAKER. That earned a lot of respect with me so they got it back. They were really respectfull when they didn't have to be and MOST cops aren't. Around here at least.

(DeRos @ Mar. 19 2007,10:09) it's funny because I think that kind of treatment has 1000x's more positive impact than being an ass and running you through the hoops and pain of tickets and impounding and insurance increases.

I was pulled over once, (or i should say I willing pulled over once) before.

I had to speed up 15 miles above the speed limit to pass someone so I didn't get run into a bunch of construction workers by the car tailing 5 feet behind me. I saw the cop after doing it and figured he saw everything and wouldn't do anything about it so I didn't run i just kept going.

I looked in my mirror and about a mile back I saw the K-mart special riding up on me.... I had AMPLE opportunity to disappear and forget the whole scenario but I didn't because I was almost home so I just pulled over and took it like a man thinking i didn't do anything too serious or life threatening and he'd just warn me, hell maybe even compliment me for avoiding a life threatening situation.... unfortunately he didn't see it that way, He had my bike towed from in front of my house and slapped me with a hefty $350 ticket for speeding in a construction zone...

I was floored, #1 I can't believe he ticketed me for saving my own butte and #2 for towing my bike from in front of my own house... after this I determined that if in the same position I'd just disappear, which is an awful decision for doing your best to be safe, but poor treatment results is poor reactions.

It's nice to read your story and see that there are good people out there doing their jobs, who understand the power we're responsible for on these bikes. If I had been treated like that I'd gladly pull over when I knew I had blown it , big or small.

Now even with the small stuff I have to really double check my reactions.
thread jacker!!!! Trust me, you saved your own ass there buddy....... your attitude was the key. I dont know any officers in shreveport that would have let that slide. Count your lucky stars.... congrats on the first ride of the year

Had a buddy who was a trooper. He was let go because he kept giving warnings. State of Ohio Troopers are required to write a citation if they pull you over
