I don’t normally go around bragging about my boys..
I am very proud of all of them. They each have their own strengths and their own weakness’s.
As a dad I feel it is one of my responsibilities to determine what their weakness’s are, and try to help them strengthen those areas.
I also try to make them feel at ease in areas they are too critical about.
Let me preface by saying all three of my boys started martial arts training when they were 5. None of them are currently in formal training but they kind of get it at home with me, since I was a student instructor and I have been training for a long time, in the normal course of the day I will wrestle around with them, doing one type of move or hold or something that they pick up on.
I have always kept them active and physically fit. Each of them by the time they were 6 could do roughly 100 sit ups, 100 push ups etc etc.
This year has been a pretty good year over all. Some ups and downs but over all it has been pretty good.
My oldest son started high school this year and his first year playing high school football.
For the entire year he was first string offense and defense, the only time he was not playing is on kick off, or to take a two minute water break. He is strong and fast and in just awesome shape and playing an entire game, first string does not wear him out at all.
I have seen him make some awesome plays and I have seen him take some serious hits and get up like it was nothing. And at times I have seen other teams place two against my son to stop him from breaking through the lines and he still gets through often.
To be honest I never have been much into football but watching my son this year playing high school ball has really got me into the sport now.
My middle son played soccer this year as he normally does, he has been playing soccer every year for the last 5 years. And he did very well in soccer this year. Plays the entire game and very rarely even breaks a sweat and pretty much right in the middle of play all the time.
And this year was my youngest first year playing football, he just turned 9. He has played baseball the last few years but decided he wanted to try football this year. He did pretty good for his first year and near the end of the season he was hitting harder and getting the hang of it.
My youngest son is what prompted this post however, the other day I was in the garage lifting weights by myself (like I normally do, I am going to start weight training my oldest now football is over). And my youngest wanted to lift with me. At his age I wont let him lift much if any weight, I just focus on endurance and getting his muscles tone first.
So while I was lifting I had him doing the basics, push ups, sit ups and pull ups. Well I challenged him last week and two days ago he comes out to the garage and brings a piece of paper and pen and I asked him what he was doing, he said he was going to do as many sit-ups as he could and he was going to write it down.
I sat there and watched him as he did 510 sit-ups. Legs out, arms folded across chest, all the way down and all the way up. I was blown away. Lol
I cant even do that many sit-ups!! Lol.. I really pumped him up telling him his brothers couldn’t even do that much and I couldn’t either and just really made him feel good about it..
It was one of those proud dad moments.
Seeing this year how good of shape all three of my boys are in physically, how there is no school activity that even comes close to being a challenge for them and seeing how they excel and adapt fairly easily in sports, it is one of those moments in life where you feel like maybe.. just maybe you are on the right track. At least when it comes to physical activity, and how I have always tried to enforce a healthy life style, fitness and somewhat healthy eating habits. (I try not to go too overboard).
Anyway, watching my youngest do 510 sit-ups and contemplating all three of my boys and where they are in life, I just felt compelled to brag about them a little.. like I said. I don’t do it too often and I don’t think my kids are perfect, and they do all have their own little issues we all deal with.. but I am proud of them just the same.
