Funny you should mention Hitler, as Germany invented the interstate which made high speed travel safe because there were no intersections.

Willie; interesting to note we were first with the interstate act of 1916 with construction in the 20s while the Autobaun was hatched around 1935 constructed mid 40s. Eisenhower beefed ours up big time in 1956 for military and trucking which is probably why your thinking they were first.
We actually had a few "limited access highways" in as early as 1909 with the bronx parkway and a few other new york new jersey parkways so the idea of no intersection highways for safty was well established here.
