I don't wave at someone across the 4 lane who is in a double line of cars and has more importatnt things to watch, but otherwise I usually am the first to wave. Then if they wave back, cool. If the don't, then that's their problem.
Sportbikes always wave, most Harley guys wave, very few Goldwingers wave, has been my experience.
As for stop lights, I usually don't pull up next to them unless it's somebody I know. I don't like it when somebody I don't have a clue about pulls right up next to me at a light (have you ever watched how even some sport bike riders weeble around when they take off?), so I presume that they may not either and leave them their space.

harleys yes... sportbikes....almost never

Same here. I am even proud to say that once we went to see a movie, and I rode to the theatre with 2 friends. When we came out, there was a fresh unlit cigarette placed on the triple tree of my Busa in honor. My 2 friends' bikes? Nada. :D

what I meant to post is that the busa has a stigma just like riding a harley or a gixxah (1k).
Most of the time I get dirty looks from other sport riders, which is ironic to me since most of the guys around here don't wear gear and ride around with their helmet on the side of their bikes.

I can't even tell you how many time someone passed me and then braked and tried to race me while I was just cruising home going 60...

most guys think that busa = posers = chrome = going straight.

Re: The REAL truth of the matter...

Top Ten Reasons Why Harley Riders Don’t Wave

10. Afraid it will invalidate warranty.
9. Leather and studs make it too heavy to raise arm.
8. Refuse to wave to anyone whose bike is already paid for.
7. Afraid to let go of handlebars because they might vibrate off.
6. Rushing wind would blow scabs off the new tattoos.
5. Angry because just took out second mortgage to pay luxury tax on new Harley.
4. Just discovered the fine print in owner's manual and realized H-D is partially owned by Honda.
3. Can't tell if other riders are waving or just reaching to cover their ears like everyone else.
2. Remembers the last time a Harley rider waved back, he impaled his hand on spiked helmet.
1. They're too tired from spending hours polishing all that chrome to lift their arms.

Top Ten Reasons Why Gold Wing Riders Don’t Wave

10. Wasn't sure whether other rider was waving or making an obscene gesture.
9. Afraid might get frostbite if hand is removed from heated grip.
8. Has arthritis and the past 400 miles have made it difficult to raise arm.
7. Reflection from etched windshield momentarily blinded him.
6. The espresso machine just finished.
5. Was actually asleep when other rider waved.
4. Was in a three-way conference call with stockbroker and accessories dealer.
3. Was distracted by odd shaped blip on radar screen.
2. Was simultaneously adjusting the air suspension, seat height, programmable CD player, seat temperature, and satellite navigation system.
1. Couldn't find the "auto wave back" button on dashboard.

Top Ten Reasons Why Sport Bike Riders Don’t Wave

10. They have not been riding long enough to know they're supposed to.
9. They're going too fast to have time enough to register the movement and respond.
8. You weren't wearing bright enough gear.
7. If they stick their arm out going that fast they'll rip it out of the socket.
6. They're too occupied with trying to get rid of their chicken strips.
5. They look way too cool with both hands on the bars or they don't want to unbalance themselves while standing on the tank.
4. Their skin tight-Kevlar-ballistic-nylon-kangaroo-leather suits prevent any position other than fetal.
3. Raising an arm allows bugs into the armholes of their tank tops.
2. It's too hard to do one-handed stoppies.
1. They were too busy slipping their flip-flop back on.

Top Ten Reasons Why BMW Riders Don’t Wave

10. New Aerostich suit too stiff to raise arm.
9. Removing a hand from the bars is considered "bad form."
8. Your bike isn't weird enough looking to justify acknowledgement.
7. Too sore from an 800-mile day on a stock "comfort" seat.
6. Too busy programming the GPS, monitoring radar, listening to ipod, XM, and talking on the cell phone.
5. He's an Iron Butt rider and you're not!
4. Wires from Gerbings are too short.
3. You're not riding the "right kind" of BMW.
2. You haven't been properly introduced.
1. Afraid it will be misinterpreted as a friendly gesture.

LMAO!

When I was a teenager in the 60's with my Ducati and Triumph and YDS-2 Yamaha, all bikes waved always. Now there are just too many people around! On the West Coast....you wave to oncoming bikes no matter what type, unless pressing it in the twisties, when entering a town with many bikes at cafes, etc, no wave. When approaching a racetrack or big meet of some type, not necessary either. Oncoming bikes across 8 lane interstate? Not usually.
To me it's a judgement thing....an unwritten part of our culture....like riding staggered through towns, but as soon as the twisties begin, more space and the whole lane is understood to be yours.
When on my recent 2 week tour, loaded with luggage...ALL bikers went out of their way to wave/be friendly, kind of a, "cool, you're on a trip dude, I wish I was with you" or something like that.
For me, if someone doesn't wave, I just recite the title of a certain book to myself, "What you think of me is none of my business"! We can only control what we as individuals put out into the world, and shouldn't expect anything in return (if we get something in return, like a wave, just frosting on the cake).
One thing for sure, trying to analyze where you are on the food chain to explain if someone waves is kinda silly, I think.

I ride to ride, not to wave. If someone waves I wave back if I see them, but I'm not constantly scanning the horizon for other bikes to wave at either, so on occasion I'll catch a waver just as its too late to return one
