Turbo or, Big Bore(1397) ?

My personal choice was to go 1397 with a Velocity Stage 2 DBB turbo. No lag below 3500 rpms and it has had ZERO problems. Starts good, no overheating, even in the Fl. heat and runs great.

Turbo is the way to go if you hav a good tuner that tunes turbo bikes. I dont know where you guys ride that are worried about turbo lag under 4500 r.p.m. in that range it does not matter what you hav you aint movin yet anyway!!! Big bore is cool also but runs out of steam. why spend the same money and get 50 less h.p. plus the turbo is upgradeable.

where are you getting your prices on sale turbos are going for $3700 a 1397 kit is under a $1000

yeah for a mild 1397 kit $1000 than add labor and extra parts like a extra batt.and still you're spending $2000 and getting around 200h.p. why spend $2000 for approx. 40 horsepower over stock...just my opinions thats all...everything is not for everybody,thats why we are lucky to hav choices.

I am not even close to $2000 for my 1397 and it wont need a second batt a turbo on the other hand will be $4300 installed ON SALE and you need to have it tuned on a dyno for say $300 and when its all done you will be only 57 horse stronger than the big bore(assuming 200 hp I am thinking closer to 220) if you need proof check out suzukihayabusa.org they speced out a stage one turbo so you would be spending an aditional $2600 for 37 to 57 hp do the math

thats why i say build it for whatever help if you need it is near by...i hav a turbo busa and it runs great and trust me no 1397 motor is gonna keep up with my bike...if you wanna play you hafta pay nothing comes cheap in this game!

Hey guys i know i,v posted before om this but i,v done both big bore, big bore-nitrous, turbo hands down you will get the most HP and torqe with the turbo [ stage 1 street kit ] 6-7 psi boost seting up with any more WILL cost big bucks. you can install yourself. you MUST! get the powercommander mapped on a dyno that has TLS by someone who knows what they are doing the install is not difficult at all and it may be a pain in the ass to get the dyno time lined up, but it is worth it the first time you push the turbo thru the gears. and no big bore or nitrous bike will run with you. if you are looking for #s 1397,-new valve springs, a little clean up head work 198 HP. nitrous on the 1397 40 dry shot, 229 HP, velocity stage 1 street kit 7psi pump gas 258 HP. also the 1397 had to have 2 batterys and 50-50 pump-race gas

I ran my 7.5lb turbo bike for 3 days straight at the dragon last yr no problems... also ridden in 95+ degree heat with no problems.

Hah, this is a question for the ages. I think it all depends on what you want to do. If you want 1/8 mile or 1/4 mile drag racing, daily driver, top speed, dyno monster or whatever, the choices are endless. For me, I drag race every weekend and also have over 26,000 miles on my Busa. I have a stock bore bike with aftermarket rods and a nice wet shot of nitrous. I have never had any trouble of any kind with my bike and beat up on big bore and turbo bikes regularly.

if your budget is 4000 grand total, you're not gonna have a complete turbo kit. 1397 is your only choice.

After eading alot of the posts I think alot are loosing sight of the $$$ variable.

for street use:
I would say if hp was your goal, go turbo
if low cost is your goal than do a few engine tricks

for 1/4 race
I would still say if hp was you goal, go turbo
if low costs then go wet nitrous

racing with a turbo is gonna cost you alot of money and time
racing with n2o wont cost as much

a good strong motor would be the cheapest but not the fastest...

All I here is problems with turbos . Also with a turbo your motor is always running with the extra pressure. I want to big bore . Then do alittle more NOS , power only when you need it.

the thing is you hear everything... the good and the bad... only the bad sticks in your mind... you never hear from the people that have turbos with no problems... running turbo for 2 yrs. over 5k miles. NO PROBLEMS.

granted I didn't install it myself... installed and tuned by motorhead himself and have had zero problems with exception of vapor lock one summer it was 100+ out.


get what you want, but turbos are awsome if installed correctly and tuned by someone who knows wtf they are doing.
