20+ years of working on cars and bikes with my dad and I've never once dry fired an oil filter. I always fill it prior to installation.

No but get in the habit of filling your filter before installing or it runs dry till the pump fills it. (Indo this on any motor)
No it didn't hurt a thing. I've tried prefilling the filter and most just pours out by the time I get it screwed on. If it was just the difference between full filter and empty filter, empty takes about 2 seconds longer for the oil pressure light to shut off. I wouldn't worry about it. The oil pump has lost most of its prime by the time you get the filter on whether it's a full filter or an empty one. The engine is going to run with no circulation for a couple seconds no matter what you do.

LOL I believe you can use a square drive on a drill to run the oil pump via the water pump. That will get oil circulated before you fire 'er up. I've only heard of people doing this on a brand new engine that never had a drop of oil in it before.
