The way it was explained to me years ago (right or wrong) is the loading of the tires are in opposite directions. Makes sense when you think about which way the loads go in acceleration vs braking. A while back I posted up that back in the olden days of 16 inch front tires I was roadracing and you couldn't get race compound fronts so you used a narrow rear and turned it around on the front.
