Just read in a thread that you are a police officer. What is your take on the laser jammers and/or radar/laser detecters? What do you recommend other then not speeding...

Thinking of getting one for the bike man. You of all police officers can understand where us Busa riders are coming from, not that I break the speed limit ever

I have to admit, that with the exhaust system, I think I draw quite a bit more attention to myself than I like, but I sure like the sound.

I have no experience with jammers. Couldn't tell you if they work or not. I'd love to test a laser jammer though, just out of curiousity. If I run across anybody that has a laser jammer and is willing to let me try to clock them I'll sign out a LIDAR unit and try it.

I've never owned a detector but I've seen plenty of them sitting on the dash while I'm getting license and insurance info from the driver. One guy actually asked if he could step out of the car once. I said sure... He gets out, snatches the detector from the dash and proceeds to stomp it into pieces on the roadway.

Detectors work as far as detecting the signal and letting you know but they really only give you a heads up if you don't see the popo before it goes off. Usually, if you're not paying attention and your first warning is the detector, it's too late and your speed is sitting in the window of the radar/LIDAR unit. Again, when I was assigned to working traffic I wrote a LOT of speeding tickets to folks with detectors.

I think they may save a few folks in a few instances but for the most part I think they are a huge waste of money. Knowing where and when to speed and just playing it smart will probably save you more tickets than a detector. If anyone asks me which detector is best I tell them to buy from whichever company it is that guarantees to pay your fine. At least that way you get something for your money.

I put detectors and jammers (until proven otherwise) into the "too good to be true" category. A small black box that you can stick on your ride and just speed away to your heart's content as long as you slow down when it screams at you? I'm waiting for some company to put out a device that they tell you will cloak you with a force field that makes you and your ride invisible to all others. Ummmm, ok.

One last note. If you do get tagged and pulled for speeding and you have a visible detector, you will, with almost 100% certainty get cited. It's like showing an intent to break the law and most popo that I know NEVER cut slack for detector owners.

as far as jammers go, active radar jammers work almost 100% of the time, but are Illegal everywhere due to FCC constraints. the passive ones take the signal from the radar and send it back with interference. they are legal in all states that radar detectors are legal but these rarely work. laser jammers work on the same priciple as the active radar jammer, they send out a wide laser beem that really does interfere with the lazer, although legal everywhere it only works on one lazer frequency, so unless the officer is using that spacific freq, chances are he is going to bust you.
as far as radar/lazer detectors go. the Valintine 1 is by far the best followed closely by the Escort passport 8500. if you are looking for something for the bike. might i recomend the Escort Cordless Solo S2, battery-powered and very effective, but expensive.
personally i would just keep your eyes open and learn where the cops are. if the officer has a radar gun, but the time it goes off, it is just letting you know that he has already clocked your speed and there is no point in trying to play it off.

just my research. i was tired of getting tickets in my Red Audi TT Roadster. honestly, i haven't changed my driving habits but i now drive a white Audi A4, they don't even notice me now.

hope that helps

To answer your question, No jammers DO NOT work. That's the short version. Do a search on Google for radar jammer reviews, and spend 5 minutes reading.

Taz is right, the escort and valentine are great but very pricey. You might want to check out the "Sensaro, Travler II" I think that's the spelling. They are less than $150 and beat both the valentine and escort on instant-on radar and matched them in the rest of the catagories. Plus they have a cordless option included and a headset jack so you can wire it to your helmet. Just my .02. Chris
