I only read your post and no others before replying and here are my honest feelings on what you said...
I believe there is very little you can do that would be "Overboard" short of canceling the trip...
I think this trip will be something great for him, and a trip he will likely remember his entire life. I feel you are doing the right thing by not only protecting him, but teaching him good practices by wearing protective gear when he rides.. He will likely end up with a bike of his own someday, and what better way to prepare him for his future in bikes than by showing him how to properly "Gear Up" for rides so he stands the best chance of survival should an accident happen..
