So concerning the draft and Obama I decided instead of going on hear say, i wanted to get it from the horses mouth so to speak.

So I went to Obama's web site

(here is the link for referance)

Barack Obama and Joe Biden: The Change We Need | Defense

Actually I am impressed. I thought he was going to be for a smaller military, looks like he plans on increasing the size of our miliatry so we can be ready for conflict and become a a respected military force once again. I didn't know this about him.

I am all for a larger military, we have been strained for years. looks like the government is having recruiting and retention problems and it does seem like the only way to accomplish the larger miliatry goals will be for mandatory service for everyone between the ages of 18 and 48. I hope my wife doesnt get drafted.

i told my sons today they need to pick which branch of the service they want to serve in that way they have a choice. my oldest son thinks he will probably choose the airfroce.

My middle son isn't too happy about it, he really didn't want to go in but I think after our conversation he realizes he probably wont have a choice..

No, a president cannot enact a military draft by himself.

But if you take into consideration that the Democrats have been trying to re-establish the draft since at least 2006. And now the dems will control what is it? both the white house and senate?

Then if you go to Obama's web site and read what his vision is. I will post the link, but to summarize, he feels that our current military is extremely strained and that it is unfair that out of 300 million, well here let me past in his statement

A Military Under Strain:

Currently, our soldiers, seamen, airmen and Marines are deployed around the globe, working valiantly to defend our nation. Yet, these heroes are under-resourced and asked to do too much by a policy that has too often taken their sacrifice for granted. Due to their incredible courage and ingenuity, they persevere, but at incredible cost to themselves and their families.

Recruitment and Retention Problems:

A country of 300 million strong should not struggle to find enough qualified citizens to serve. Recruiting and retention problems have been swept under the rug by an administration that does not understand the value of service to our nation.

Here is his military expansion policy:

Expand to Meet Military Needs on the Ground: Barack Obama and Joe Biden support plans to increase the size of the Army by 65,000 soldiers and the Marines by 27,000 troops. Increasing our end strength will help units retrain and re-equip properly between deployments and decrease the strain on military families.

And here he plans on creating a "volunteer" civilian service force

Create a Civilian Assistance Corps (CAC):

An Obama-Biden administration will set a goal of creating a national CAC of 25,000 personnel. This corps of civilian volunteers with special skill, sets (doctors, lawyers, engineers, city planners, agriculture specialists, police, etc.) would be organized to provide each federal agency with a pool of volunteer experts willing to deploy in times of need at home and abroad.

So there you have it folks. probably best to choose which branch you want to go in (or which branch you want your kids to go in)

And this wont be just for the men, since we have a military that is male and female there wont be any discrimination here. everyone gets to serve!!

What also will probably happen which will make a lot of sense and be benaficial to everyone is they will probably draft the following groups in order (at least I have heard this as speculation and makes total sense)

1) They will gather up homeless people first and draft them. Since most homeless people are able bodied and it will have the least impact on them or their families this will be the best group to go after, it will get these people off the streets and make them productive citizens

2) The second group will be those who are on the welfare system who cannot find jobs. this will be the perfect opportunity to provide them employment and medical benefits for them and their families.

3) The third group will probably be anyone who is here illegally. they will probably be offered citizenship if they serve for a minimum of 2 years.

After they have exhausted the above 3 pools of groups, then they will probably next start with all able bodied 18-21 year olds.

this plan could really work. it would get people off welfare, off the streets and increase our military force!! ssaaaaaawwweeeeeeeett!!

I heard that he was looking more into the unmaned drone approach to military forces. He seems to be thinking from a more technological stand point. Why invest a whole lot of money in building a military with more humans that need to eat, sleep, have medical attention and the most important phsycological damage when you can introduce machines.

Didnt you read the part where he plans to increase the army by 65,000, the Marines by 27,000 and then establish a civilian volunteer force of 25,000

That is an additional 117,000 people he plans to add to our military in one way or another.

That is directly from Obama's web site. no guessing or speculation on that. And he probably does have some valid points. not enough people are joining the miilitary, it probably is time to bring back the draft

The draft won't work now day's because people are not afraid of the gov like they use to be. If you want a strong military you will need the full support of each soldier would'nt you? He maybe also pointing to making the military more appealing for people to join. Remember when the Germans forced the prisoners to build their wepons and they faild in combat. That would sum up to the same thing as a draft. 1000 soldiers giving 300% would be better than 10,000 giving 10%.

I think if he would draft some group it would be the radicals like those KKK groups that love this country so much and are so inclined to protect it. Get their azzes on the front lines and let them show how much they love this country. If you are a registered gun owner and not serving your country. Get your azz out and show how much you love the 2nd amendment and let all that time at the range pay off.

I totally agree with you.

I stated pretty much exactly what you said in another thread. I too believe that if they force people to serve in the military it will probably degrade our capabilities.

It will be interesting to see what they do.

I only mentioned the draft because Obama is a democrat and the democrats having been trying to bring back the draft since 2006.

I doesn’t matter if people are afraid of the government or not. The bottom line is if they bring back the draft and a person is drafted, they either go into the military or they go to jail.

They can sit in a jail cell all day long and not be afraid of the government.

After enough people are jailed for avoiding the draft the population will begin to fall in line.

And there is no more running off to Canada. Canada will turn draft dodgers over to the US government for prosecution.

I guess we will wait and see. I figure that if they do plan to bring back the draft we will know about it before the end of 2009

there are problems keeping the soldiers that are enlisted. alot enter, server 4 years and then leave. this is the issue that needs to be addressed first.

as far as everyone serving I do not think it is a bad idea.

Like I said, incentives are what will make people decide to join. If they know there will be a strong chance they will not make it back alive or in one piece or even mentally stable then what is the logic in joining. If the risk is greater than the reward, then a nice cozy jail cell does not sound so bad. If you have enough people to resist then you wont have any choice but to scrap a draft idea. Maybe the idea of teaching more languages in the military was pointing to making people who wish to become a citizen serve in the military. Either you will have a big turn out or a drastic reduction in people wishing for citizenship.

Hey here are some candidates right here. They are looking for a good fight. Sign them up. The funny thing is as soon as their feet touch the ground and they realize it is real, they'll start crying and calling for mama! Checkem out. I hope one of the first things Obama does is take care of this problem in America.

I've been a Republican all my life, but even I know this is BS. Saying things like this does nothing but make Republicans look either stupid or disingenuous.

In 2003, Charles Rangle, a Democrat, drafted the Universal Service Act as a "scare tactic" in opposition to the Iraq war. Rangel said “if those calling for war knew that their children were likely to be required to serve—and to be placed in harm’s way—there would be more caution and a greater willingness to work with the international community in dealing with Iraq.â€￾

The bill failed, of course, with only 2 in favor, 402 opposed. So obviously, this was not something favored by the Democrats, it was just a couple House Representatives trying to make a point.

Rengle tried to get the bill voted on again in 2006, but the bill got no sponsors and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected the proposal. So much for Democrats trying to reinstate the draft.

Obama has never said he was in favor of conscription, he instead wants to further "bribe" our youth into serving their country with education credits; as if we don't do enough of that already.

Kids these days... they should serve their country because it's their duty to do so, not because they see dollar signs. Whatever...

Here we come Nazi Germany! :banghead: Look at you're history folks! A civilian military force controlled by the government. A force at it's beck and call to suppress any civilian activity at the command of the President.

Soon we'll be required to show ID to cross state boundaries within the U.S.A. They already took away our right to travel to neighboring countries (like Canada) without a passport, and they can deny your passport.

Hopefully the world will end before it gets that far. I don't see anything really improving with the current "They owe it to me" attitude of Generation E (Entitlement).

We will not get conscription anytime in the near future, since the military services are achieving 98% of their required recruiting goals, with only the Active Army missing their goal by 2%. The reason we won't get a draft is that, under present law, it would be too easy to simply be found not qualified for active service. Example: the local draft board declares Johnny Smith as 1-A, and Johnny announces he's gay...whoops, sorry an announced homosexual is not permitted to enter into active duty. Example: the local draft board declares Johnny Smith as 1-A, and Johnny announces he has just finished smoking pot, or snorting cocaine, or dropping LSD, and that he intends to continue his drug usage...whoops, sorry a confirmed drug abuser is not permitted to enter active duty. Other reasons someone would not be permitted entry into the Armed Forces by law: objectionable tattoos; racism; objectionable organizations that support overthrowing the US government; failing the mental entrance exam; failing the APFT; failing Basic Training; a history of mental inbstability; a history of criminal behavior; misdemeanor conviction of spousal abuse; alcoholism; blackouts; sleep-walking; and bed-wetting. In order to make a draft work all of these federal laws would have to be over-turned by Congress, and that just isn't going to happen. Not to mention that every senior officer has stated that a return to the draft would not solve our manpower problems. Calm down tin foil hat wearers, the US is not going to return to a draft.
