Hi All

I'm looking to make my Gen2 a little bit lighter. I'm not doing this to go faster or quicker. All i have done so far is refit my Yoshi R77 which will be replaced with Akrapovic's when they get here. I have also just bought the decat H section to remove the cats, this should take off about 26 lbs of weight from the exhaust system as i want to keep the 4-2 look.
So what else can i change or remove that is not going to cost silly money to do. I would like to make a list of things i can do over the next winter.
what have others done that was a cheapish weight saving modification.

You can switch to a lightweight battery, that's not too expensive and can save you like 5 lbs. If you dont mind to change the original look, you can change to a lightweight fuel tank, you can change to a lightweight handlebars set up, but those 2 are little pricey.

Right i just did the front and rear on the scales and got both near as darn to 128kg (give or take a lb or 2) with full tank of fuel. So does that mean the the total weight for the bike is 256kg (564.5 lbs) with my yoshi R77 ???

As for my reason for the weight i want to remove, is to make it better when i'm around town, if you have read my other threads you will know my health is not the best. It's like my main reason for removing the cats is to stop all that heat on my legs when stuck in traffic.

On a side note, how much heat will the Akrapovic carbon fiber end cans take. Will me wrapping the headers move to much heat to the cans and damage the carbon fiber ?

Yes, that is correct, you may add the weight at both wheels for the total. This weight is subject to the accuracy of the scale as well.

I have a Gen-1 that hasn’t been weighed. I might get around to doing it one day. It certainly feels a lot lighter than my previous Gen-1’s or my B-King or Gen-3.

What i found when i made one of my kawasaki zx9r's into a streetfighter, was it did not like speeds over 120mph. the front end gets very light.

Sorry to hear about your health, I guess I missed that thread.

I wonder if some ceramic wheel bearing will help you "feel" the bike lighter? The bike might not be lighter on the scale, but it will "feel" lighter when you have to move it around.

not sure i could tell a difference at all - had ceramic bearings on my CF , they failed so i went back to steel races

It is very easy to drop weight but it isn’t cheap by any means. Tank and wheels are your biggest items but that’s $2k-6k depending what you go with. You can do a lot of little thing but that adds up very quickly also. It just depends how much you want to spend? Tell us your budget and we can make suggestions in that window.

I was just starting to chase the carbon fiber bug down...I priced out all CF body work with Motocomposites and was thinking about Core Moto rims but then put a full stop on that....I ended up getting the rear signal light pods as I couldn't stop that order but stopped everything else...it was over $6k for body work and $3k more for rims and ceramic bearings...it made no sense to spend that kind of money on my bike.

It would have been interesting at how much weight I would have shaved off with all CF body work...probably not as much as I figure though...I do know the rear signal light pods weighed about the same as the bubble wrap they were in...

I don't want to go silly with money and it will have to be done over time. So it's going to be the little things i will change.
I have also replaced the oem rear shock with a maxton unit.
But i have added other items as well, like the R&G protectors, 1080p cameras, zumo sat-nav and heated grips. the list does go on a bit.
It's imo very hard to see where weight can be saved that you will feel.
I think i'm going to have to save up and change the wheels. I've been reading that the R1 wheels save some weight and the price is not that much to do the swap.
Are the Gen3 wheels lighter and will they fit the Gen2 ??

I just put my spare set of wheels on the scales.
No discs on the front and no discs or sprocket carrier on the rear. But both with new tyres.

Front Wheel 20.2 LBS
Rear Wheel 27.6 LBS

So has anyone got the weight of other wheels they have put on there Busa. Just wheel, tyre weight.

There are figures posted in a couple of threads. Yes, one may have to read carefully for the generation of the bike and what is installed on the wheel. But this thread seems to have some level comparisons for example.

I swapped a core Moto front wheel saved me 4 pounds on my gen 2. Wheels and body work will cost the most to save weight. From what I have learned cutting 1 pound can cost you $50 to $150 bucks. Yes there’s stuff you can do to take weight off the bike for free.

More than a few on here can attest to that.....I keep referring to @c10 who worked hard at getting his RJ down on weight yet kept it's essence as a Hayabusa intact...

It's a big 'ol heavy brute to start with though....comparatively speaking of course...for a sport bike it's heavy, for a sport tour bike it's a light weight...
