Helmet law in Michigan.

Michigan is on the verge of repealing the helmet law... Decision by the Governor by next week. I believe I had a thread like this a few years ago, but our prior Gov. didn't sign it. Our current Gov. said "if you meet these restrictions I will sign it", and they did.

How many of you live in helmet free states?

How do you feel if everyone's insurance goes up because of this decision. This is what we are facing in Michigan. Being a weird "no fault" state, we have a charge on our insurance for "MCCA" or "Michigan catastrophic claim association". This is a fund for people that get hurt that do not have enough insurance to cover their injury. My neighbor is an insurance agent and he was showing me the paperwork about the MCCA fee rising if passed. For example, Right now the fee is 145.49 a year, and it will be rising to 171.49 a year.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for your rights and all, but not on my dime.

By the way, I see some of you paying cheap cheap cheap for insurance on your bike, and dang, its almost as low at this MCCA fee alone :banghead:

But I know, for example, I pay 1500ish for full coverage per year. Its horrible, and that is the best price I can find around here. Its this no fault policy. Us with insurance pay for the people without.

Yeah, in WI we have mandatory insurance. If you have a car/bike, you have to have insurance on it. Helps with the rates a little..

It got shot down here in TN last month; I called my legislator against it.

here in michigan we have some of the highest insurance in the country and its just going to get higher and its RIDICULOUS..... I have an older cavalier i keep because it gets over 30mpg and every year and a half i pay what the vehicle is worth in insurance prices

I am curious about your case. Would it have affected the premiums for other riders?

I have the opinion that it will however that is conjecture at this moment. I keep thinking about all the brain matter they would be scraping off the asphalt at the Dragon/Cherahola and that's good enough reason for me.

In Florida there is no helmet law and it is a no fault state.

The thing going on in your state is that MCCA. That Michigan catastrophic claim association thing is what is really messed up in your state. A fund kept by the state for people that do not have insurance that are required by law to have insurance. So basically you are paying for someone else that does not follow the law.???

What they should do is not raise the rate until they see if the new helmet option law even causes more money of the fund to be used. But that would require common sense and not taking you hard earned money. So the politicians will never do that!

I'm firmly against helmet, seatbelt and any other law that tells me I have to be safe. I also wear my helmet regardless, I just don't like the gov't saying I have to.

However the fact that insurance will rise along with everything else that has been steadily going up has me hoping it will table until better times. Folks are cutting it tight enough as it is.

Just FYI, per my insurance agent if you live in a state with a helmet law and have an incident in a non helmet law state while not wearing a helmet your insurance can deny the claim.

I'll always wear a helmet while riding, regardless of the laws of the state I'm in.
Going without a helmet is like not using a condom for a one night stand, you can do it but why???
And I agree I don't want to pay for somebody elses freedom of choice. They can take their chances, but I don't expect to have to pay for it.

My point exactly. I just quoted progressive for poops and giggles, and their quote was 4500 a year for full coverage. Nuts.

I guess it cool to have your rights and be free to do what you want, but a helmet or seatbelts is a good law to abide by.Like the guy in NY that was on an anti helmet rally, crashed, hit his head and died in the name if fighting a good law.I think the brain buckets should be outlawed as well but thats my opinion. We have a helmet law here and bikes dont have to have insurance .

Like Tm@nFL was saying, Florida is a no fault state with a no helmet law. But also on motorcycles if you own it out right you do not need to carry any insurance on it either the only time you do is when your lender requires you to have it. But if you don't carry insurance on your bike, like not wearing your helmet. You run the risk of getting hit by the over 50% of cagers down here that are driving without insurance on the cars/trucks.

And when I first got the Busa I called StateFarm and they told me they wouldn't even cover a Hayabusa in Broward county. But then again I didn't have any other policy with them at the time.

I can attest to the fact that you need insurance regardless, because the guy who hit me in 2005 on my YZF1000 had a revoked license since 1998, falsified tags, no insurance and the car was registered to a false name with a Texas address. Needless to say he got 90 day probation and no jail time because the DA told me they weren't going to do anything to him because he had kids and already had a revoked license. You have to love south Florida. No speekie da inglish.

That happened right here in LaFayette, he was actually a Coroner from one of the near by counties. I know the medic that got the call for the accident.

Totally agree with you.
I wear a helmet all the time and I do not have to in FL. I it is safety thing, I also hate all the bugs smashing on my face. Florida has a lot of bugs.

You can say that again about the bugs Tm@nFL. I tried a night ride up hwy 27 through the everglades one night, and this was the results after 40 miles.

Wait is this pic considered food porn for FastFrog? ???
