Fellow members in Connecticut join me September 17th 2006 for the 2nd Annual Peter J. Lavery Memorial Scholarship Fund Run.

First and foremost for those of you who don't know Master Police Officer Peter J. Lavery who was on the police force for 22 years (17 served in Newington and 5 in Berlin) was shot and killed when he responded to a domestic disturbance call. During the initial confrontation, Patrolman Lavery was shot as he entered the home's basement, where the suspect was located. MPO Lavery's partner was able to take the suspect's wife to safety while under fire from the suspect, who was armed with a semi-automatic rifle.

The Newington SWAT team, with the assistance of other area SWAT teams, responded to the home and attempted to negotiate with the suspect who remained in the basement. After several attempts by the SWAT team to remove the suspect, the man committed suicide.

Officer Lavery was 47 years old when his life was taken from him on Thursday, December 30, 2004.  For more info please visit his Officer Down Memorial Page where I copied most of this information.

The ride is September 17th. registration will take place from 8:00 am until 9:45 am at Maguires Sports Bar 3573 Berlin Turnpike, Newington CT. The donation is $20 per motorcycle. All makes and models are welcome. The ride will be police escorted and will end at approximatly 11:15. At the end of the ride there will be free food, live music, and a cash bar.

I work in Newington and I remember the morning of his funeral. I was on Rt 9 south and I passed the Orange County Choppers truck & trailer. I thought they were making a delivery or something. I found out later that the Mayor of Newington knowing that Officer lavery was a huge OCC fan called them and arranged to have one of the bikes in the parade. I can't remember which bike right this second.

Anyway hope to see some of you guys there.
