Clutch springs might have caused it but it is more likely due to improper installation of the cover. If it isn't aligned properly it won't sit flush on the cases, causing it to bind when tightening. That coupled with the pressure of the slave cylinder and clutch springs probably led to it breaking.
The key is making sure the dowels are aligned before torquing.
I at one time ran HD springs with my stock cover for 2 years on a turbo bike with no problems.
ok im gona tryn get some pics i dont know what kind of springs are on it i bought the bike like that but come to think of it it may have been in a bind thanks guys yall been a big help since i bought this bike
