I work for American Express at probably one of the largest data centers, if not the largest, as an Operator Engineer. I operate 5kv switchgear and 1500kw generators and 800ton chillers to maintain the environment for thousands of servers, switches, routers, etc.

I just designed a chiller plant for a hospital. 1200 tons of cooling.
Hospital have huge cooling loads specially when it comes to ORs where you need 15 air changes per hour.

Our facility has 8-800 ton chillers for 12 20-ton regular air handlers, about 15 PIU's, and approximately 120 45-ton raised floor air handlers. We also have 6 100 ton air handlers for the UPS systems. The heat load on all of the raised floors is phenominal with all of the servers begging for mercy. We also have 10 1500KW generators rated at 260 amps each at 4160vac. All in all it's a pretty good place to work. Same political bull you would get anywhere.

how much redundancy do you have? and how bout emergency power?

Forgot about the emergency part. WE have UPS(uninterruptable power output systems) which consist of battery systems and generators to supply power 24x7x365. There is someone from my department there all the time, holidays or not, day or night. We rotate nights to days every 7 weeks, work four days on and four days off and work 12.3 hour shifts. Everyone gets 10% shift differential to work the nights but we get that ay even when we rotate to days.

That's impressive,
I am working on an hospital job right now and the cath lab and streotaxis labs uses computer equipment and if a patient is on a table and the power goes down, they rely on UPS to allow the docs to remove the catheter and close the patient up. That is nothing compare to you but we are using 300KVA of batteries.

I am switching company next week and this firm is ISO 900x (can't remember which one). I don't know how it's going to affect my work.
