I just don't get it... We know that water is the most destructive force on the earth... we know that we can hold it for a time but it will escape... We know water runs downhill. We know that hurricanes will come back to New Orleans.

WHY WHY WHY would you build a house under this levee? If I am not mistaken the only place you can get flood insurance in NFIP and isn't that the US government?

If this is true there is no way that the govt can be profitable on replacing homes over and over.... If all the information above is accurate then we are subdizing folks to live there... That fence is the back yard of the guy in the picture...

I couldn't agree more. Why would you want to live below sea level on the coast? ???

Don't look like he's got much margine for error there...a little rise and he's swimming...
Again...

BTW-the govt' is NEVER about profit, it's about votes and their own personal pockets,
that's why the US Postal looses money...Amtrack looses money...and why they should
stay out of Healthcare, the Car Business, and everything else for that matter.

Some people just don't get it. If you build by an active volcano ... hmmmm.

New Orleans is below sea level. If you've ever been to La especially the southern part you will see more houses than you can count that are built in/near a flood plain.

It's just life down there. Not much different than a rider getting into a near fatal bike crash and go out and get another bike as soon as he's able to ride again. Some things are a way of life for some people and nothing or no one will ever change them.

I live and face Hurricanes every year .
Y'all live in Tornado alley.
Folks live in dangerous not smart to build areas .
Just how it is .

I think my chances of getting wasted by a hurricane every year is greater than New Orleans but I ain't moving and if my home blew away or lost it's roof like last time I would just rebuild .

Labusa said it. Same way people build home in and near the fire prone forests in cali over and over. At the base of a hill that will eventually have a mudslide. Florida home owners and galveston tx area home owners are living in hurricane prone cities and have rebuilt before. Okc among other towns have been ravaged by tornadoes and people rebuild. Just nature. If you call it home its usually hard for most people to abandon.

As for the gov ins backing. Its retarded. Stupid ventures like this are why it makes me have hypertension every tax season. Our money gets shoveled into a bottomless pit.

Stuff like this is why I am on Lisinopril....I wish one person that didn't care about PC or politics would fix this nation. The guy's house is below that wall and we are just one more hurricane from the same thing happening again.

The difference is I have insurance that the govt does not subsidize and I didn't scream for the the govt. when storms rolled in. The people screaming the most in La were those without insurance.

Not talking about INS or no INS it may also have alot to do with New Orleans being a major port and this port needs lots of people to maintain it and work there .
If everyone packed up and left it could affect things ?
Maybe ?

I agree, everyone cuts their own deal. I don't think the gov should be rebuilding houses for those that can't or won't keep ins. I really don't understand these things anymore. I understand the want to live in places but if you can't justify it financially that doesn't mean do it and hope someone bails you out.

I know people that lost homes in katrina but they all either moved because the home was trashed or they rebuilt on ins. All them are pipeliners like me and work make a decent living etc. But I asked them why rebuild and most of them said this was the first time "their" home got damaged. Its worth the risk to rebuild to them I guess.
