World Record SCUBA dive...

I'll be missing until after August 1st.  I will check the board briefly each day, but probably nothing more than lurking.

We have a local diver that will be trying to set a new world record for the longest SCUBA dive.  He will be trying to stay underwater for seven (7) days
wow.gif

During this event, I will be acting as one of the Public Safety Divers (PSD).  We will have a PSD with him 24/7 with rotating shifts.  I will be working my normal job, then going home to sleep, and then going in at 11 pm to start my PSD shift.  This will be like working a double every day of the week, so I doubt I'll have the energy to surf around here.

The last two weeks have been spent building the dive platform, preparing the area underwater in the lake, and training in preparation of the event.  All of the PSD's are volunteers from our local underwater rescue team, and have been putting in many hours of their own time in order to support this event.  We are all hoping he is able to set the new record, but we will all be very glad when this is all over.  This has been a long process preparing for this event.  We've been training for this since March, but the last month has been especially busy.

Here's a link to the official web site:

Have a good one guys...I'll see you when it's all over

Oh, and I want to see how "pruned" one's hands can get after 7 days!

It should be interesting. They actually make a cream to use, so that your hands don't absorb the water "as much".

Luckily, while on shift, each PSD will rotate about every hour or so with the other PSD's. Between dives, we'll be monitoring the comms station and u/w video.

This is going to be on the Today show also with Regis/Kelly, and should have some other National coverage, so there's a good chance you might see some other footage.

well bet there is a good posibility air is going to be pumped down from the surface there for it not being under pressure so should help with deco sickness. what do ya do for 7 days underwater? I know get a big ziplock bag for your laptop

This is gonna sound crazy, but if you are under water for 7 days....uhhh, how do ya go to the bathroom/sleep/eat/or drink?
I mean, you can't lay down to sleep can ya?

It is always the small things that interest me.....

Okay...I see I need to add some clarification to this

TV Dates: I'll try to find out and post.

Depth: Platform surface is at 15 feet. We have a 25' deep area marked with a line to follow in case of severe weather (i.e. Lightening). There will not be any decompression, but it somewhat like a saturation dive...even at 15 feet. The body will absorb Nitrogen faster at 15 feet than it would on the surface, so due to the extended exposure, we still have to be cautious. Exiting at day 7 will take a while, as we will be going up very slowly.

Air Source: To be considered SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus), he has to be breathing off of individual scuba tanks with ABSOLUTELY NO tether to the surface. This means no surface supplied air. We (PSD's) will be changing out his complete tank and regulator setup about every 4 hours or so. When the old tank comes up, we will swap it for a new one so that it's ready to go for the next change out. The working divers will be making sure that everyone's stand-by tanks are always filled.

Food: He has been working with nutritionalists and dive medicine specialists to come up with a diet that is similar to what the astronauts use. Mainly a liquid diet, but some semi-solid foods. He will have a full-face mask with a feeding tube similar to what the military uses on gas masks.

Bodily Functions: This was a big hurdle. With the proper diet and "cleansing" prior to the dive, the worst of the two shouldn't become an issue. Due to the liquid diet, urination is a mandatory evil. He will have a condom catheter that will have a hose going to the outside of his dry-suit with a valve. This shouldn't be a problem. He has extras inside the suit, and the suit is designed so that he can get his arms/hands inside without creating a leak. Can't really talk much more about the suit, since it is a specially designed one. Corporate BS.

Thermal protection: He will be wearing a dry-suit so that he is not affected by the water temp. Even at 74 degrees...if you were in a wet-suit, then after a few hours, your core temperature will start to drop and you'll start the hypothermia cycle. If for any reason the dry-suit should flood, then we will switch him over to a heavy wet-suit. Yes...we have done this in training, and it is a pain in the azz, but it can be done.

Hopefully that will help with some confusion. I'm posting this from work, so I was trying to be brief. Sorry about leaving all of that out in the beginning.

One more item...

<span style='font-size:17pt;line-height:100%'><span style='color:red'>HE</span></span> is the one that has to go for 7 days without carnal knowledge.
laugh.gif

...and NO, we will NOT be assisting him with anything in that area

okay, two items: If he does have to take a dump, then the dry suit comes off, he does his business, wipes HIS OWN azz, and then we put the wetsuit on him. I guess they'll be getting a surprise on the surface because I am not bagging it up.

Gotta draw the line somewhere.
