Where to buy Valentine 1

now I am sure you did not run the bird-dog in the big truck, that would be against the law....

i9500 here, PM KS Waterbug and see if he still has prices on the units... he got me mine at a steal...

I'm not a big fan of radar detectors. I've been on the operator side of the radar gun and have seen how easily a radar detector can be beat. The detector can't detect that which is not turned on yet. Back when I worked traffic I pulled over plenty of cars with radar detectors mounted in the windshield and of course those were the ones that ALWAYS got a ticket regardless of the excuse.

Just my two cents for what it's worth.
Willing to bet the majority of those you nailed were the cheepy cobra and junk detectors out there. You get what you pay for when it comes to stuff like this.

Of course the detector is only going to work when radar/laser is at work. In the case of instant on, if your the only one on the road then yes it's only letting you know your caught. No new news there. Riders I know that used V1's and other detectors said such a full on alarm ment it's time to leave in a bunch of different directions NOW (none of them got caught either)

. However I'm not into police chases anymore at all. I'd rather do what I enjoy without the police even knowing or having a chance to engage me which can be done without riding like "Ghost Rider" without a on-board camera. Knowing your area well, doing certain things at certain times, and just plain common sense do wonders.

For the record I got my Valentine 1 last season and honestly, I lost count of how many times it saved me after 20 and that was within the first 2 weeks. However I didn't just get it to instantly warn me it's time to slow down because there's cops gunning people ahead. Like you said, such thinking will be useless against instant on or if the officer is even using the unit. Other reason I got it was to Scout for police and where they like to hide on some of my favorite routes. Laser or instant on does bounce off other vehicles. I'll cruise at speed or ahead/behind (never in or alongside) the flow of traffic and will pick of traces of instant on or laser if it's being used. I also do pick up traces of a powered up unit of a patrol car parked in a parking lot out of site. They can't get any readings from the side like that (only direct front or from behind) but they usually will Guestimate a vehicle's ticket worthy speed if you look to be going too fast. Thanks to the V1, they see i'm doing the speed limit by the time I go by.

It's helped me weed out plenty of hiding spots police love to use be it on highways, country roads or the city. They love being by stores with automatic door openers that read x or k band. Mostly at intersections with the officer up the road aways. Just about any detector won't be of much use if they're using X or k band since it will show full strength x or k band when going by a rite aid or wal-greens (unless you have those bands turned off and now your really just as bad off). I have gotten Ka band hits in such areas as well and caught site of the officer just a little ways down. Also have seen cops who are a ways ahead of the intersection with another cop down the road ready to intercept as soon as vehicle description is given. While my detector has saved me plenty of times in "sudden" up the road signal reads or hits from behind, It has greatly helped me scout out and memorize speed trap areas which are becoming more common with gas prices effecting patrols in my area.

In re: "Suggest you do a little more research on detectors, the V1 is getting dated and there are better devices out there"

Such as?

What you obviously don't know is that the V1 is upgradeable so no matter which model you have they can make it as good as their most recent model.

do not plan to debate radar detectors - here is a recent test vs the escort 9500i by a very reputable source. I am sure there are other recent tests as well. I have that model and the zr4 jammer.
True and theres other tests out there that Favor the V1. Truth is it's taken a decade plus for other manufacturers to be on level or outdo the V1 which is still the benchmark to surpass in these tests (some of the V1's patents are about to expire it's been so long). If that escort can be sent in to be updated like the V1 then all the better. Reliability Still favors the V1 from what i've seen on radardetector.net forums though.

Truth is you can't go wrong with either of those units no matter what the tests say. If either saves you just once it's already paid for itself and gave you plenty of change if you tally up ticket and lawyers fees and that's counting the points being nixed so your insurance doesn't go up.

This is a friendly place. nobody should be taking or making personal attacks on each other over the speeding thing. to each his own. its all just a huge game and a gamble. there are ways for each side to try to gain an advantage...if you get hit, go to court and fight it. thats another part of the game. a second shot at winning or beating the ticket. police play the game. motorists play the game. no big deal as far as im concerned. it sucks getting a ticket... but if you really think about all the times you could have gotten one, but didn't... i think we are all still quite a bit ahead in the game.

In terms of detector tests though, while the 9500i is a fantastic unit people may want to take what Craig Peterson says with a grain of salt. Besides being jaded at not just at mike valentine but also GOL and Radar Roy as well, his credibility doesn't seem so high (however Radar Roy also has been accused of using Older versions of the Valentine 1 against the newest units from Bel and Escort). Craig issued a challenge to back up his test and while some have offered to answer, no word from craig now.

Like i said before though, either unit you can't go wrong with.

Absolutely right. It's all about revenue and nothing more. My complaint is the hypocrisy of it all. I like the laws Montana has or at least used to have. There wasn't a speed limit if I'm not mistaken, but if you were driving dangerously, you were busted. I don't know any of the specifics, but a buddy of mine from Missoula used to tell me about it.
I used to work for Whistler about 17 or 18 years ago. When I left, we were building a "radar detector, detector, detector."￾ It would detect that the police were using a gun to figure out if you had a radar detector and it would shut yours off while giving you an alarm. Mainly for Ct, D.C. and VA if I remember right.
