This happened a while ago here in England, it is now illegal to call a barmaid or shop assistant etc dear, Hun, sweet, darling love and so on if you do this you can be reported and get a fine also if someone else hears you saying this they can report you. The pubs I go to the barmaids always call you darling or whatever. The reason I'm writing this is the PM called a woman dear in Parliament yesterday and labour are accusing ham of being sexist and out of touch with the times etc, when is all this nonsense going to stop, govern the country be an opposition party with new ideas or something.
PS when Gorden Brown called a woman a bigot then apologized I would have had a lot more respect for him if he had just said well she is a bigot instead apologizing and then talking to her for half an hour groveling.

Political correctness running out of control. It's heading that way here too. You seem to be in the lead though.

The problem is that we ALLOW people to be offended by everything. If somebody was offended by something and we told them to STFU, problems would be solved, but we live in a culture where we try to appease EVERYONE, so everybody always looks for something to get offended by to "get something" out of it. Soon, we will not be able to do ANYTHING because somebody will be offended.

Quite frankly, im offended by everyone else's existence, so they need to fix that.

the P.rime M.inister called a woman dear in Parliament

And I'm sure everybody on this board would be OK with Obama referring to female members of Congress, Michele Bachmann, Judy Borg Biggert, or Gabrielle Giffords as toots, honey or sweetie in Congress.

Sure y'all would.

I will explain more in England we've got a advert where Michel Winner (yes death wish) is advertising car insurance they do a thing where someone's car is mocked up as though it's been in an accident, not real people only actors, then they show it hasn't and he says "Calm down dear it's only a commercial", that's what the PM did, he said " calm down dear" as a bit of humor, so of course labour jumped on it, no sense humor.

Referring to people by sweetie, dear, honey, darling, etc., etc., can be, and usually is, viewed as a lack of respect within the workplace. That is why I only use people's names during discussions at work, never using anything else. It can cost a person their job and a company lots of grief($$$). That is why most major companies and corporations have policies against that type of stuff.

It's not about what you think or feel but what other people think or feel. Someone can overhear something they don't like and report that too. Any Human Resource staff here?

Isnt that the problem? I.E. Ultra-sensitive people or people that take every opportunity to be offended (even if they really arent offended)

That's called perception. If only every person would perceive criticism as constructive. Take sweet talk as "sweet". Take a hard nosed response to a stupid question that they obviously know the answer to but they are just trying to trick you into tripping up so they can run to your boss like the stool pidgeons that they are, as STFU! Wouldnt we all get along better. Try this at work. Go a whole week giving short just the facts answers to any question asked and see how long it takes for these same people to ask "whats wrong?" All of a sudden they are so sensitive to your needs....pathetic!! Soap box off, sorry!
