That is why, while CA is a very nice place to visit, NEVER live there. I was out there on a business trip in the early 90's, and there was an earthquake. I was in a hotel room, buck naked asleep in the bed and it woke me up (I was young and studly then). I though, here I am, about to die, and they are gonna find me dead, naked in the dang bed....

no, not big enough to damage anything, thankfully.

two big, sudden jolts and a lot of rumbling.

How long have you been in SoCal Craig?
Guessing you weren't here on Jan 17, 1994...

Or maybe you were and they still make you jumpy... ?

no, I wasn't here for Northridge; I moved from NYC in 1999.

Ohhh... you're in Venice - that's why. If I remember right, the land there has a tendency toward liquefaction in an earthquake...

Don't worry, it just felt really strong because the ground beneath you is not solid.

We've actually had the soil tested here, and we're on hard clay, fortunately.

That was a relatively small quake, but it just happened to be directly underneath us, about 5 miles down.

Clay has a high moisture content. It will transfer shock much more readily than say, the qranite under Manhattan.
