Radar Detectors

After a trip from Jacksonville to Miami and back, I had a great experience when a GSXR 1000 pulled up on me, pointed down at the radar detector on his console and signaled to follow him... so I did. Whatever he had was extremely helpful because he slowed down 4 times in under and hour, and each time was able to point out a law enforcement office to me.

So... I want one. For those of you who have one, which do you have/recommend and why?

Don't have one but have heard Bel, Passport, are good ones do a google search.

Valentine One because its saved me thousands of dollars in CA, NV, UT, CO, WY, MT, ID, WA and OR. I wear earbuds in order to hear the earliest warning possible at speed, when its noisiest. I've also been able to speak to Mike Valentine or his wife over the phone when initially getting information about the unit for the motorcycle and ordering stuff. Can't beat it, expensive or not, it pays for itself in less than two 'saves'.

The Passport 8500 and Bel RX65 are identical on the inside, and are both EXCELLENT detectors for the money. You can picl them up on eBay for a deal, and both are compatible with helmet-mounted and screamer type warning systems. I know quite a few guys who use them.

i have a cheap whistler i bought at walmart was 175 but they discounted it wrong so it rang up 25 so i went and bought them all out and it works great i don't use them on my bike i want to get the whistler on made for bikes thats all stealth or a escort but my whister gets killer range i got the warning about 1.5 miles away on a curved road wich was pretty good and a notice before going over one of the huge bridges when the cop was on the other side on the bottom

V1 or Escort passport 9500i/8500 X50. I have the escort and it has saved me probably several thousand dollars and countless points in tickets that I've avoided because of having it. My sister-in-law's dad has a V1 and he says the same thing about his. The thing I like about the escort is the size. The V1 is a bit bigger, but it does tell you the direction of the alert. Kind of a nice feature, but I just couldn't justify the extra $200 just to know the direction. (the 8500 x50 is 350, the 9500i would be the same price as the V1, but it's also a newer/better detector than the 8500) But basically, if you go with one of these 3 you won't be dissapointed. When you look at the prices, just think of how many tickets it would take to pay for the detector. . . Chances are probably only 1, but maybe 2.

I have an X50, love it and have considered a valentine one.

All you could want to know about them is at this link

9500i for me too... audio out, USB2 in, seems pretty solid..

I can not say it has saved me .10 in fines...

I get hits all the time but I do not spend my entire ride at over the speed limit..

as most any truck driver can tell you, by the time the thing goes off, all it has done is told you that you are getting a ticket in most cases... I guess if you are going to say it saved you a ticket every time it goes off, I suppose it has saved me thousands

(BTW they are illegal in any commercial truck in any state)

LEO's know how to setup speed traps to catch people using detectors...

if you are the lead vehicle and the unit goes off, you are most often already tagged...
Just nice to have a reminder to watch your speed....

the only way mine saves me is that I am never the lead car and on most of hte hwys around here, cops setup in a spot and either run radar all the time or they'll use the POP on/off. If I detect anything out on in the middle of bfe I slow down, either just paranoid or its working but I've not had any tickets yet

The real trick is that it alerts me to be aware of my speed when it goes off, not that I honestly think it will save me all the time

Escort Passport 8500 x50. You don't have to use the little box I have on the windscreen, I just got the hardwire kit that had it with it cause I figured it'd be easier to see it flashing if it was up there. You can just get a straight wire kit without that.

I also found that if you bolt the mount to the screen it does a lot better. With the suction cups it bounces all over the place and actually bounces enough to smack the windscreen. When i get home I can add some pics with it bolted, but I'm at work right now and that's the only pic I have here.
