I am working in the garage on it now and figured I should stop before I break it. Took the hex nut out and started pulling the rubber thingy. Am I doing this right? I could not find the post on this although I know it's here someplace.

remember to take off the plastic rivets on the inner fairing piece that surrounds the gauges. THe rubber piece comes right off

yep. pull out the rubber thing from the outside. you can use water (I used spit - eeew). If you get frustrated, you can always push from the inside-out (have to take off the inside fairing).
