My dad had the same problem with his Busa. No mods, fully stock. It just turned over and over smelling like gas but not firing. I told him to change the plugs, he did and it fired up instantly.
I view plugs as a preventative maintenance item. Spend the $10 first thing each spring and swap them out when you do your oil change. I'll be putting in my special racing plugs this weekend, I hear their good for about 25HP.
