How do you have insurance with only a permit?

I bought my first bike brand new with out a permit or anything, they never even asked. No problem insuring in Illinois. I did later take the MSF course and get my lic.

Went from age 12 to 25 with out a motorcycle licence. never got pulled over once.
lost my license shortly after getting it, wasn't as careful any more.
I'm now 32

got my M the same day i got my regular license when i was 15...i knew the girl behind the counter at the DMV and she stamped my paperwork as a renewal, charged me $1, and out the door i went...i've never actually been tested on a bike to this day...i'm 39 now so i guess i've had it for 24 years now

i've had my permit for about 4 years now, but since the new law in FL went into effect I cant renew my permit anymore. I have got to go take the MSF class now and shell out $200 to do so if I want to be legal.
