Gen. 1 vs. Gen. 2 sprocket interchangeability

Do gen. 1 and gen. 2 sprockets interchange? I know they are different tooth counts. I seem to remember seeing something about them being interchangeable when the gen. 2s first came out. It's time for new chain and sprockets for my baby, and I'm considering going to a larger rear sprocket. I want the durability of steel sprockets, so I'm wondering if an OEM gen. 2 rear would be an option.

Nope, nada...rear has a different bolt pattern and the front...the trans output shaft is larger on the Gen2.
