Electrical problem

Hey all, I'm helping my buddy out with his 99R1. Yeah I know it's not a Busa, but still"¦. Any way, check it out"¦ We got back from Iraq and pulled his bike out of storage, changed the oil, fresh gas and threw a new battery in. The bike was running awesome but then for some reason one morning he went to start it up and the dash wouldn't light up, the starter wouldn't turn and the only thing that was happening, was that the starter solenoid was clicking like it was cool. So I came over and started to do some trouble shooting with him, and we ended up replacing the battery, voltage regulator and the starter solenoid. None of that corrected the problem. So we got this crazy idea to push start the bike to get it started and then hook up the voltage meter."￾ We also tried to jump the solenoid that didn't work either"￾ Well when the bike started the dash came back on and every thing worked on the bike like it was suppose to but only as long as the bike was idling above 3 grand "choke was on"￾ as soon as you killed the choke the bike went down to it's set idle of 1200 but you couldn't rev it or it would die. We checked the stator and it's good, but everything is pointing to a major drain on the battery. We started to go though connections and wires although we haven't finished yet, we are well half way though the bike. At the moment, it's looking like his starter went out, but I wouldn't think that it would cause a major drain on the battery? Any way if you all could please we need some ideas or suggestions on what could be happening, any way thanks for all the help!!!!!

Wish I could help bro. Be patient, someone will help you figure it out.

I know this is an elementary question, and you've probably already thought about it, but are there any aftermarket, electrical components on the bike?

Oh,and also, how does it act at 1200rpm idle? Is it rough, is it normal with the exception of not being able to rev it? Do all the lights and everything still work?

Load test the battery. You might have a bad cell. Electrical systems do all kinds of crazy things on a bad battery. Swap it out with another known good battery from another bike or run some jumpers from a car and see if it acts up.

The only thing that is aftermarket on the bike is the exhaust and the air filter; the Jets were changed and tuned by a Yamaha mech. When the bike is running at 1200 rpm's all the lights/dash work on the bike, but the bike just doesn't want to run. It sputters and dies when you put any type of throttle to it. It sounds like one or more of the cylinders are not firing. I pulled the plugs and took a quick look and they are all firing but it looks like it running a little rich..." although I can't check the spark to see if it's actually firing, due to the starter isn't turning. We are going to run thought the rest of the wiring tonight.

+1
Get the bike to crank on it's own power before you worry about the running, problem could be connected.Start with the grounds, biggest enemy on any electrical curcuit. Then the main power curcuits.Problem could be anywhere after it has sat so long and being 10 years old.Just make sure that new battery is good before going any farther. One shorted cell could really screw things up.
