Just got a brand new scooter with 3 miles on it. Book says to stay below 5500RPM til 500 miles and below 8500RPM til 1000 miles.

I've always believed that you should break it in the same way your gonna ride it (within reason)...........................
what do you think?

Ride it like you stole it... No no... Load it, load it hard, early and often... HArd acceleration, repeat... Change oil within first 30 miles or so... At least according to one school of though.

Personally I broke mine in like I plan on riding it... Rode her home and on the way did alot of HARD accelerating while keeping the rpms under about 8k... just a lot of heavy loading...

Bike is running great... Read this....clickity

yes indeed put a load on it and do the roll on's often. Don't start it and let it idle, don't rev it or just listen to it in your garage. I think putting a load on the motor in the very early stages of the breakin are critical.

Did you check out the link Darden?

Lots of folks here have broken them in the "HARD" way and report great results.

I broke mine in "SORTA" hard? If that makes any sense. Loaded it hard and frequently initially, then eased up and just made certain to use the full RPM range under load until my first service, then I rode normally... Kissing the limiter in 1st, 2nd, 3rd,

I read the link..........WOW! That completely flys in the face of every thing I've ever heard about breaking in a new engine. The hard break-in theory makes perfect mechanical sense. I've got 24 very soft miles on the bike now, but I'm seriously considering do the hard break-in. Load-unload. Load-unload. What the heck........it's only mechanical! Worse thing that could happen, I'd get major wood!

That is pretty much how race motors are broken in... but on an engine dyno.  They throw the load on it and let it eat.  If I buy anything new, that is what I do, try to find a big hill and climb it.  Just load it up! If it breaks, it wasn't right to begin with.

I agree about loading the engine, just be careful of those new tires.

the motoman break in is great for rings but your breaking in a new crankshaft, clutch, trans, bearings, etc and even breaks. take it easy the first 50mi and even warm the engine up and let it cool off then repeat. load the thing in a progressive manner. you can feel the eng loosen up as you go. heck 5k on a busa is 90mph or so the 500 goes fast nuff. imho breaking careful in the breaks, clutch, trans is just as important as the seating the rings. free advice and worth every penny.
