Hey Guys:
Its been a while since I have really been on here. I went out for a ride Sunday. had to get up early to go to work, since I left my phone there. On my way from work I met up with another rider. We both met up with his riding buddies that I met last week after running the road I like to call Super Bike Road! They were all wearing proper and correct gear too for the riding that issued later. (By the way the older guys are fast... very fast! Remember that younger riders! They like to prey on the weak and less experienced riders!
)
Well, we get gas and pickup another rider along the way. (New to the group like me!) So a Honda 954, Triumph 675, Yamaha R6, and a Kawasaki 636 are the bikes the group is on. The newbies are on a 02 R1 and me on the 08 Busa. I did get a little crap from them jokingly about the busa. They made a few comments...."Like dont let the HP get out from under you!" I took this as a positive remark! (Be careful Tim!) Other comments were like "We know its a sport bike, but its big and you are small, so will it turn slowly!)" I said.." You maybe right...Ill be careful! I will ride with in my own limits!"
The rules of riding with this group were all laid out:
Ride your own ride at your own risk. If you feel like you are riding above your head....then you are. Give everyone room and watch for hand signals etc. We all are going to ride the road and do a sighting run, then come back through it. If you are slower, we dont care! We will wait for you etc. We want you to be safe with in your own means. Its not a race track. Its a day to enjoy riding and have fun. If you are faster then the guy in front of you, pass with care on the straights only. For most of the roads we well be going 5 to 10 mph over and nothing more. Only a select few of these roads we do play a little. And these are the ones we will stop and to let everyone know about and ride first, then turn and around play if it safe too!
So we get to SBR: They say the rules to everyone again. We go out and ride a few sighting runs, and to get everyone an idea of the roads conditions and proper lines for riding it. After a few miles and checking everything out , the pace went up. Not bad, enjoyable, and flowing. Everyone is riding in there comfort zone. After a few more runs around the area, everyone has a good idea of how each of us ride...in general. So we decided to run SBR again. This time the pace goes up more.... and then more. The front runner riding within his means and then me when in mine. The Triumph 675 falls off the pace we had. (He said to me after the accident, that he was happy with the pace he kept.) The Honda 954 and I were riding further then he wanted to go.
So, the 02 R1 is behind me after about 2 miles as the Honda was moving the pace up to his comfort level. The Triumph 675 hung back at his pace. The others (R6 and 636) were in the back. The R6 was showing his brother on the 636 how to ride the line and kept an even pace. The 636 rider is new to this. The R6 guy is an experienced rider.
Now us three (Honda 954, 08 busa, and 02 R1) are running the rode quickly. The guy on the Honda 954 is very good. Great lines and Smooth! I am 6 bikes behind him. Giving him room and myself too! This road is fast, very fast with rolling hills etc. I look in my mirrors a few times on the small straights....Notice the guy on the 02 R1 hanging in there. But I can tell he is working to keep up. I say to myself "Dude know your limits! Be careful in my head!" These words did apply to me too... just a few clicks higher then the 02 R1's rider. The 954 guy was then riding at my skill level and comfort for the road a few more miles into it. I spoke toughs same words to myself after we left the 02 R1. Our pace was very fast, smooth, great lines, and very fun. And I was at my comfort level limit on the 08 busa. If the guy on the 954 picked it up even more.... I couldnt safely return the pace to keep up!
Now after a few more miles... no 02 R1 in sight. Just the 954 and I jamming on SBR. Almost to our waiting point... I look into the mirror and see a headlight in the distance. I thought is was the Triumph 675 guy, but it ended up being the R6 guy. (Didnt find that out til latter.) Well we both get there and wait. Bikes turn off. Both of us giving each other a thumbs up. A slightly surprised look on his face when we stopped. I guess for a busa to hang in there look! After about a minute, we both get concerned. No bike exhaust notes being heard coming our way... Then we both look at each other and go somethings wrong! I tell him its got to be the guy on the 02 R1... I tell the 954 guy why I thought this. I said.." I think I saw the 675 in the distance...and not the 02 R1, and 02 R1 looked to be having some issues trying to match our pace from what I saw in the mirrors!" So we both leave going back the way we came............
As I come around the a few turns I see smoke... then fire from the woods... and then a bike burning in flames. I then scanned the other bikes that had stopped on the sides of the road.... The R6, 675, and 636 together. The burning bike was the 02 R1. 10 feet away from the wreckage was the rider with the other guys around attending to him. The 02 r1 guy was hurt pretty bad, nothing you cansee on the outside. The others kept him alert and asked a ton of questions to see how he was doing. A SUV cam along and dailed 911 and got help out to the 02 R1 guy. As all of this was going I asked the other guy to help me clear the rode from the wreckage that was all over the road. We both got it all cleared and collected. Then I went over to help remove his back pack from him to allow him to get more comfortable til help arrived. We all got his information ready to help the 911 responders when they asked for that stuff. He ended up getting flown out of there to a major hospital. He stuffed a torn aorta, a punctured lung, bruised ribs, bruised liver, bruised spleen, and a fractured spine. The guy on the 675 had his wife come out after the 02 R1 guy was gone to come collect his stuff. He went to the hospital later that night to give him his belongings. I also gave him my number to him to contact me too, for help and other ?'s once he was stable.
Currently the 02 R1 guy is doing better and is now home resting to heal. I text or call him each day to chat with him.
Now... how did he go down? No one was around or saw it, but I have pieced most of it together myself after walking the road,looking at the pictures, asking him some questions. This is my opinion... of what happened!
After talking to the 02 R1 guy. He said he hit something in the road. Like a some rocks or pebbles. He did say he lost the rear first... then the front. (Well if this is true , I didnt see any rocks there in the corner. Not saying it wasnt there, but didnt see any.) But I noticed from his tires markings that he did lose the rear first, and then the front. Well this corner he lost it on, is a small rolling hill. Which, unloads the bikes suspension... and gets it out of shape and light on its tires at higher speeds. (I roll off the gas some to help settle the bike when coming to the crest of these rolling hills.) As the bike unloaded its energy in the suspension, he lost traction and was probably on the gas. In which caused it to come loose at the rear and then side ways, panicked and hit the brakes. Loosing the front, and going down on his left side. He stayed on the bike before it went airborne into the trees. He was with the bike, then let go and hit the side of a sandy driveway burm with his lfet side breaking his collar bone and rolling on to his chest. Hitting to top of the sandy driveway, were he recieved his other injuries. The sudden stop! And slid another 15 on his side towards were the bike landed.
Now the bike took flight and took out the top of the tree. Then bounced off the bottom of another tree and caught fire, and the forest too. The fire department got it out.
