The world trade center towers had a unique structure that used steel box structures around the perimeter to support the beams running out from the core. Due to their lightweight, those steel box beams were melted in the fire that was unexpectedly hot due to the planes having full fuel loads. This was studied over and over by many groups and is a lesson most all architects and engineers study in school. Even the firm of Yamasaki, the building's designer agrees.
