Hey yall, well I dropped my special request chit today requesting to be sent to Iraq. They send the people that are approved to a Army training site and give you a basic class on weapons 101, combat 101, gorilla war fare 101, etc. Then they send you to Iraq or somewhere in that side of the world. I am just wanting to do more for my country than I currently am, hope I get approved.

Good luck and stay safe.

God bless,

Dan

So let me get this straight, you are volenterring to go into a hot zone, to do more for a country that is screwing its service men left and right.  Take it from a disabled Vet, combat is not cool, glorious, or anything one should be so eager or quick to jump  into.  I pray for all of those who are in it and hope they come home safely, but if you dont have to go, I wouldn't make a point of being there.  Hell most of my tour was spent in Bosnia, Croatia, Masedonia, and finally Kosovo.  Its sucked reall bad, and its was no way close to what those troops are going thru in IRAQ.  I wish you well if you do go, and I will pray for your return.  I as a former soldier, I support them 100%, but that doesnt mean I support a government that willing throws lives away for  causes that dont benefit the country.

Fellow flying squid here with some insite on IA
here's my input on this:
if your looking for a little action you should seek it in other ways, going IA while honorable, isn't the best way- the training they give you is minimal and you never really know what job ultimately you'll be doing. heck you could be assigned a more boring job working in the consolate pushing papers or gaurd duty on insurgents in a prison, just a word to the wise.

If your going for some action do it right a get trained right, EOD-SWCC or SEAL, those are three that are most notable and SWCC and EOD are realistic goals, SEAL, well if you are mental enough for that, and I mean have the mental fortitude to do what they do. Just remember its not all glory over there. I'm sure there are many that can attest to this. The greatest enemy many of the guys are overcoming is the boredom.

goodluck either way- by the way... how it looks like things are going, many will be volunteered for IA either way within the next 5 years, that's what the higher ups are estimating.

I'm just a civilian over here, but the boredom comments are right on the money. (And there are 20,000 soldiers/sailors/airmen on this base with the same problem.)

There are definitely some hotspots, but if you get assigned to a large base, you'd better bring something to keep you entertained. Might be a good opportunity to take some online college classes or something. If nothing else, you can save some money to finish fixing the bike!

A soldier does not question. He follows orders and kills the enemy.

The thing is... how much do you really know? How much do I really know?

For that matter... how much do any of us really know what's "really" going on?

Facts are: Muslim extremists are attacking US sites and anything they can that has to do with US interests (that they can). Iran has a nuclear program in progress. N. Korea is testing rockets... oh, and we WERE attacked by "somebody" on 9/11.

This is a different world, now. It's not wwII it's wwIII....

If he wants to see action, so be it. I did the same thing. Live infantry, die infantry, hooah!

Our government has been corrupt since its inception.... it's nothing new. All men in power want more power! Why did George W. Bush run for President? Easy... because he was a rich billionaire, owner of a baseball team, son of the president, a texas governor.... so what's next? Uh.. um.. PRESIDENT!! He didn't run to help you or me! He ran to be a powerful man! To go down in history!!! Just like all Presidents!!!

We already know our politicians do NOT care!!!

But... our soldiers DO care!!! So V8 will not be fighting for our government or our President... he'll be fighting for us!!! Citizens of the USA!!!! The people!!!

I, along with others, appreciate all of the people working overseas regardless of whether or not we agree with the reason why you are there.

I don't think you are crazy. I went to Viet Nam when I was 18. My son GSXTacy was in desert storm. Do what you think is right for you but take care of yourself. That whole situation is such a mess, and I wish I could say I think we have a good chance to end that conflict, but there are so many factions involved it may be impossiable. I appreciate your service , take care of yourself.

Keeping my political opinion and multiple previous tours to myself. I dont find anything BigSimp said offensive, I actually understand his train of thought, being we served in the same areas, and I've served in some more since then. I also have no issue with what Pan said either, however I think your taking BigSimp out of context, or see thats how I read your reply.

V8, I will say, be careful what you wish for. As stated, you could end up in a shiatty position over there, bored off your arse, wanting to do more, but not being able to because of political restraints, mission etc. It doesn't sound like you've ever deployed before, if thats the case PLEASE, talk with ppl that have, closer to your job the better. I could tell you tons of things, but being I am Army and have a totally different mission etc, may not help. IF, and I wish you the best, IF you go, please update the board (or at least myself) with your address while there. I'd be happy to send you things you WILL need or want. I always felt appreciated when I was "over there" and rec'd packages etc from caring ppl "back home." Just be careful, some of us old tymers like sending "questionable material" like gay porn and toys, so you get to open it in front of others in your unit...always makes for a good laugh

Best of luck brother.

I am also a Viet Nam vet. There is nothing glorious about getting shot at. I know from first had experience. However, a man must do what a man must do. There is true honor in service, and true comradship with your brothers in arms. Whats its really about once the shid hits the fan is protecting your brothers in arms and yourself. Taking care of each other is the true reality. Best wishes, warmest regards, and God speed.

I really admire you for wanting to serve your country in such a dangerous way, this is why I really hope you do not get approved. I hope you have to stay right here, not putting your life on the line. I hope you are never faced with having to take another human's life or have to live with the scars ( mental or physical) war can inflict.

If you do go, I will pray for your safe return as well as the safe return of all your brothers and sisters in arms.
