I try that, and just plain nothing happens. I've even gone into the properties where you change the background, font, etc... And it won't even let me click on a background pic from the factory settings...2002? Ooooh...
How are you trying to change the background? You should be able to right click and "Set as desktop background". If it doesn't work, let me know exactly what happens...

account with admin rights is a good place to start. If you right click on the desktop and go to properties, does it allow you to change the settings for the background there? If not, I'd rebuild the beotch and start over.
