When do you need a BOV?

Depending on turbo size and amount of boost, you may want to run both a waste gate (either internal or external) and a blow off valve. The waste gate vents pressure between the head and the turbo while the blow off valve vents excess pressure between the compressor housing and the throttle bodies. Just my opinion but I recommend using both on a "daily driven" turbo street bike pushing more than 8psi with a GT28r or larger. The advantage of running the valves is prolonged turbo life, less stress on the engine, and faster spool when on the throttle going through the gears. When running mid to high levels of boost on a setup with out a wastegate/BOV the thrust bearring tends to wear out much faster causing oil to leak into the compressor housing.

Personally,i think the dragbikes should have one as well to vent off boost when shutting down the bike on the big end of the track. This would decrease unwanted pressure against the turbo .Or what if you have to "let off the gas" when trying to get down the track and get back into it to try to salvage a run? I would run one in any case. And I do.

I have my bike down at HPC. Greg at Hyperbike is installing my BOV now. I ended up buying a Greddy, which Greg recommend. It seems to look like a nice piece.

This is an inexpensive hks copy. It is adjustable and makes a great noise. It also keeps me from wondering if a bent my throttle plates when i chop the throttle in the corners.

maybe an air shifter you probably don't need a BOV but any other time it is good. because of the pressure relief it does not send the pressure back down the compressor stalling it. and when the compressor bogs down it takes a little longer to spool up the turbo. so when shifting the relief (BOV) lets that pressure Blow off and the turbo can still be spinning quite fast so when the gears engage and you slap the throttle back again it is quicker to respond and spool up boost, for less lag in the turbo during any off on throttle transitions... not to mention added safety net for the motor and possibly better longevity for the turbo.

I had a greddy on my hahn kit :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

not something I would have recommended unless you are pushing over 10 psi.

HKS would have been my suggestion. Have seen them work well with as little as 6psi.
