It's not mandatory to crash during the learning curve of the illusive wheelie. Every member on here would dearly love to pull the front tire in the air and carry it until the forearms cramp but few have the gonads to make it happen. My guess is most wheelie critics are guys who has never had the tire more than a few inches off the ground. But I can assure you, once you have mastered riding on the rear tire, you'll do it on every ride. You'll make sure you find some secluded place to lift the front tire high into the air and ride that puppy out until the road is no longer straight enough to steer around the corner.

After spending hundreds of hours on the rear tire, my advice to Brad with only a few months of total time in the saddle, if you are serious about learning to wheelie, sign up with one of the wheelie schools such as UpOnOne. You'll learn more there in one day than you'll learn all summer doing it on your own. And, you'll learn how to approach it safely. If a school is not an option, then I'd suggest finding the best wheelie guy in your area and do your best to get some input/guidance from him. It's very difficult to master the wheelie without guidance. You'll develope all sorts of bad habits that are dificult to break.

Always start your learning curve in 1st gear, no exceptions. 1st gear is much safer as you are going slower in case you do end up on the pavement (And that's always a possibility) It's also much easier on your scooter to bring it up in 1st.

Don't worry about covering the rear brake when you first start as it's just one more thing to occupy brain space. Keep it simple. If you do loop your scooter trying to wheelie, it will happen so fast you won't have time to think about the brake much less use it to save yourself. In low gear you have tons of compression. All you have to do is close the throttle and it will come down, hard but it will come down. If the bike is over center so far that compression won't bring it back to earth, your brake will do you no good at that point.

If you are going to attempt wheelies on your own, don't start out trying to bring the front wheel up more than few inches until you get comfy with having the tire off the ground. Then, progress very slowly as your comfort level comes up. It takes time and lots of practice to get the tire comfortably high into the air. The key really is practice. Lots of practice. If you only ride once a week and try two wheelies on a ride, you'll never master the wheelie.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

One other thing to consider. Learning to wheelie on your busa is not as easy as learning on a light and nimble 600. You will abuse your busa with lots of hard landings (The bike is heavy and half that weight is on the front tire) so don't be surprised if you replace the seals in the forks a couple of times before you learn how to land gently?

Hope I've helped you with a bit of insight on improving your riding skills. Wheelies are probably the most fun thing you can do on your bike. However, it does take time, lots of time, to make it happen. I think woman call that a "Commitment"

First gear, twist the throttle. No need to pull or anything, slide back in the seat to reduce wheelspin. Accelerate harder than you think when it starts coming down, your wrists and nutz will thank you.

Not only have I had the front tire off the ground 'much' more than a few inches, I have had the Busa airborn.... How many of us can say that? I don't advocate either for a MC newbie though, especially a MC newbie on a Busa.

Plus you buy a sportbike to wheelie, impress chicks, go triple digit speeds, and break all sorts of laws.
With statements like this I must say you are an IDIOT.

-To wheelie? So you purchased a Busa to wheelie?

-Impress chicks? This is your hope for getting laid?...Good luck w/ that.

-Go triple didgit speeds? I'll give you that going 100+ is much more fun on a bike but my car does 100+ easy as well.

-Break all sorts of laws?!!! If you bought a bike to do this then you are the kind of squidistic moron that gives us all a bad name...thanks a lot you moron.

For the record, I have no problems with wheelies just that doing it on the Busa is very damaging to such a heavy bike, plus your weight w/ gear.

Getting the front wheel up (6") on a roll on is fun and doesn't compare to a full wheelie, but no one should by the Busa for stunt riding.

I bought my Busa cause I wanted the best dang sport/touring fastest thing on 2 wheels.
It just so happened that I'm getting addicted along the way!

The busa is not the bike to wheelie...

too heavy, you will probably blow out fork seals..

Sure, it looks cool seeing a Busa nose up.. but you would be best to get a lighter bike of that is what you want to do...

just my .02

If your addiction to wheelie/stunt has overcome your need to ride one of the fastest sport tourers ever built then by all means trade it in for a 600, 750 or litre bike and go wheelie it until the cows come home.

If you support black's statement then I guess I'll throw you in the IDIOT boat along with him.

And hey, at least I'm not dottin' cotton...my panties stay white.

BTW, I have much more fun hitting a long high speed sweeper than a wheelie. Riding fast and controlled through turns, acceleration and with others impresses yourself...stunting is for those that feel the need to impress others to feel better about themselves.

Now why would I want to do that when I can do it on my Busa???
You need to watch the ZX12R/Busa.wmv comparison video (sorry I dont have a place to link it for you) and you will see that the stock Busa has no problem pulling a full b/p wheelie.
It just so happens that 2 professionals are riding both of the bikes so they make it look very easy!!

somehow I knew this was going to get ugly.
Look,it is not for everybody,I loved doing wheelies on my 10 speed, and doing it on a bike is the same, but takes a lot more balls.Period.

Now calling names does nothing for this thread.

What percentage of the bike parts on Ebay do you think are off bikes that wrecked from failed wheelie attempts?

Anyhow , there are plenty who ride the corners over their ability trying to show off or whatever and end up dumping their bikes...I am not sure why anybody would view wheelies
or any other stunting any differently.

I think the term riding within your limits applys to wheelies
as well.... for example learning to wheelie in front of those
hot blondes who just flashed you trying to coax you into doing a wheelie is probably not a good idea...better to soak up that boob shot and think about them for awhile instead of looping your shiny bike.

I will learn to hold a wheelie one of these days, I love that feeling of the front tire coming up.

have 2006 busa with tre, yoshi exhaust, and 2200 miles of riding experiance, all in 3 months now its time to do what its made for funnnn   fffffuuuunnnnn
first of all, you not going to get a friendly post in here...most of us in here, been there and done that long time ago...more like 10 or 20 years ago...
and if you want to willies and stuff, you can always buy a stunt CD in anywhere...plus, none of the members going to tell you to do any stunt, is not recomended...I haven't seen one trick bike made out of a busa...cuz it has just too much power and its not easy to control...
