And how long will a cord last?
It all depends...around here everyone is burning wood as a secondary heat source, sometimes a cord of wood can last a long time because they aren't burning wood everyday.....

.A neighbor burns wood almost every day and will use up to 7 cords of wood for a winter, but saves on natural gas.....and he thinks he's saving money.......until we did the math together one day...

He figured he burned $2600 worth of wood......and even in the coldest month he pays less than $40 a month for natural gas even with a hot water on demand system....

So in that case, wood is far more expensive to heat with not to mention it has to be handled a bunch of times between stacking, carrying inside then cleaning the ashes....

He changed his wood stove out for a natural gas unit last fall, it's a fancy one with remote control, he can sit in his Lazy Boy and start it...he's far happier......

Hi. We have a big 7 bed room house. We only heat with wood. We also heat the hot water with a wood stove. We have 3 stoves and a fire place in the living room. So I do not know much wood we burn. But all of our wood is free as we have 57 acres of land we help take care of the fire roads in 1500 acres. It is kind of a pain to get up before 5 am to get the house and water hot.

As a kid, I grew up on a farm and we had a huge stone farm house all heated with wood, at one time I estimated we burnt through 20 cords of wood, it seemed that cutting, chopping and stacking wood was our primary pastime.....I vowed to never heat with wood when I grew up.........and I never have......

Even though I sometimes do it, I still hate the sound of sharpening a chain saw.....

I have a sharpening kit for it, there are two files and a guide....

I have gotten rid of my gas saws and bought a Ryobi 40 volt one, I cut and trimmed a 40 foot tree on one battery......it's pretty impressive.

I'm sure over time I will be able to cut less and less on one battery but for all I use a chain saw these days, that's ok.....
