steering sideway play

yesterday I had my bike very close parallel to the curb and when i would steer against the curb, I could see the tripple clamp and handle bars turning while the posts (looking at the adjustment screws) would stay in place. It flet like there was rubber bushing.

Am I being clear?

Is this normal?

Not normal. Should be no play whatsoever. Sounds like worn out head bearings or something has worked loose. Check to see if the triple clamp bolts are all tight and particularly the steering head nut. If they are tight then you probably need new bearings for the head/steering tube.

Well it is not a death sentence or anything, just new bearings. Not that expensive but to replace them might be a beeyotch unless you have the right tools (bearing race puller and press). But I would try to tighten the head nut first as it might take up some slack in the bearings if they are worn (temporary fix). Keep an eye on it either way. If the bearings fail you will be sorry (wobble wobble down!!!).
