There was a reason that they were called the greatest generation, surviving depression and a world war then coming home to build our nations to what they become.....
I've had the privilege to speak to many soldiers who fought in WW2, often times they'd open up to me probably because I was a fellow soldier....
Many of them still don't understand why they survived the war when so many didn't......
I've been in combat under fire myself and often thought the same thing....mostly my thoughts were "how the hell did I come through that with no injuries"

I used to see and speak to them on a daily basis. They all drove Lincolns. 
None come in any more and I’m in the most heavily populated old folks place in the country.

Bill Millin stepped off his landing craft on that fateful day wearing his dad's First World War kilt and bravely roused his comrades with traditional music as gunfire and explosions rang all around them.
