Woman Fights To Run For City Council Despite Not Speaking English Proficiently | Fox News

Her lawyers say let the voters decide.
Arizona state law says she has to be proficient in English to run.

What amazes me is if you read the article You'll see she graduated from Yuma high school in Az.
Graduated from an American High School and can't speak English :banghead:
What kind of standards does this school have to be graduating folks who can't speak?

Just throw your arms up in the air and  is all you can do.

I’m with you Blanca. I say NO way should she be able to run if she can't speak well enough to answer questions for the Judge or read/comp it. To answer your other question....some schools in AZ have "English as a second language".

I think it would be to her disadvantage if she were elected and were not proficient in English. Just my thoughts. :hmmm:

are her civil rights being violated, um no not one bit. She is applying for an office and the laws, which mind you were not struck into law Jan1 this year but many years ago, say you have to meet X criteria. If she meets all the other legal criteria, being able to communicate is pretty high on the list of ones you would want someone to meet. I get that she's probably a good representative of the people but she does them no favors by not being able to effectively and efficiently debate/defend her position(s) on issues with others.

In reading the article, either her english SUCKS that bad or her lawyer is a toolbox. She only would do the interview in spanish and not any in english. To me, this just highlights in big bold letters that her language skills are no where near up to par for a governmental position. The articles suggest she's taking language lessons, perhaps she and the community she will represent will be better represented if she were to buckle down with her english lessons and run for office at the next election.

Our school system has a legal obligation to teach anyone that is here in the states (weather or not they are here legally) and has to have interpiters for them to learn . They must take english classes but that doesn't mean they have to learn it very well.

As far as her rights being violated... Yes ! You can't say someone that can't speak english can't run for office ! What if a mute person ran?

But of course, if she got elected, the taxpayers would be required to hire her a translator (probably a relative) so she could conduct the city's business...:banghead:

Speaking from a Hispanic perspective...she needs to get a life, and NOT one in Politics at the tax payer's dime.

Spanish is my first language, came here not knowing Engish, had a tutor and was required to stay AFTER school to learn the English language and so I did...now me speaky good:laugh:

Learn i or get the F out...simple really

When I lived in AZ my kids had to go thru the school day when teaching was 1/2 english then they taught it again in spanish. I thought it was ridiculous and a waste of my kids time to be learning. I am glad I moved out of AZ. Besides the california people moving in there and creating AZ county of California. The greatest site was AZ in the rear view mirror headed to TX

So we all know. From the media. They state that the town which she wants to represent as councilwoman is a small border town which speaks predominantly Spanish. Nobody has raised any question as to whether or not she will be able to communicate well with her constituents. It is Arizona law that say she must be 'proficient' with English that's stopping her. Her lawyer says there is no clear definition or test to show what 'proficient' is. Even though she went thru interviews and failed basic comprehension by not being able to respond properly to questions asked her atty says that doesn't matter.

Kinda curious as to how bad her English is ??? Seems to me if she graduated High School there and can't speak or understand the language should be enough grounds for a civil suit against the educational system in the county  I think you need speak and understand English I see no violation

Don't believe for a second that a persons ability to use the English language is an indication of having the ability or intelligence to get the job done.

This man should have been fired an escorted out of the building and sent back to Georgia after this statement. He speaks perfect English perhaps adding an IQ test to the process could help get the USA back on track:laugh:

I do commend the Military rep for keeping his composure and just smirking instead of just flat out laughing in his face. Which sure and many others were for many days after:laugh:

Manny add a little more context to video if you can. What island is he worried about tipping over?
And what was going on there to make him worry?
If you can?

But he is a d u m m y! No island is gonna tip over no matter what you put on it!

You can't blame him, he was educated in Georgia.

This is not a matter of civil rights even. If you run for an office of a country, you should be able to speak that country's language. And how does one graduate from a US school and not be able to speak English? *headscratch*

Yes we have ESL here to. I just dont understand though? How can you lower standards or change them enough to where people who don't fully understand English can graduate from an American high school?

It's the same thing that rubs me wrong in regard to citizenship. Up until about 1970 I believe the citizenship test was administered in only one language, English. Now it's given in over thirty languages.
I've been to four ceremonies in the last year and 90% of the people there were just waving their little flags during the oath and accompanying songs and they had no idea what was being said.

Go to Germany and see how hard it is to become a citizen.

If proficient use of the english language is a requirement for public office there are many people who are native speakers that don't qualify.
To quote Radio Raheem: " D mothaf__ka, D. Learn to speak english first alright?"
Hell no her rights aren't violated. If it's a requirement, and it should be, she needs to learn. The whole high school issue doesn't surprise me though, education standards in this country are a joke.

My High School. Due to the bi-lingual classes I had people graduate with me that could not speak or read English.have some

I like the idea of helping them but it just delays the shock that you need to at least have a working knowledge of the English language to get a high paying job.

I believe it was Guam, they wanted send more troops. What do you need more context for??? I think his statement pretty much covers all the points by itself. No need for any further clarification to see the obvious

Would it surprise you to know that there have been over 100 votes brought to the congress to actually officially make english the language of the USA and each and every time its been defeated, generally because its voted against not because it didnt get a minimum # of votes. Just think of the impact, if english was the official language no one would be required to print anything in a secondary language, etc etc. I wish they could finally vote on it but no one in DC has the bawls to pass that type of law. Just one of the many lesser known facts about the buffoons we have running the country :banghead:

As someone who immigrated to this country many moons ago, NO ENGLISH, NO, CITY COUNCIL SEAT!!!! COMPRENDE.....:usa:
