I want to mount by radar detector on the bike, will a cobra (or any) detector work with a dark smoke ZGDB? Is so, what kind of mounts are you guys using? Pics would help. Thanks in advance.

I dont have a radar detector...

...but, from what I have heard it should not be a problem IMO

Shouldn't be a problem. I am looking into getting a radar detector for the long rides down I-95.

Your radar detector works just fine behind your smoked screen. I have mine mounted behind a dark smoke DB and it works perfectly well. I even did a test with a wireless escort S2 which I could hold in my hand. I went through a known radar and the S2 held in my hand with no obstructions picked up the radar at the same time as the escort X50 mounted behind the dark screen.

As a matter of fact, they work quite well behind the plastic fairing. I have one mounted behind the plastic fairing on my GSXR1000 and it picks up radar with no problem.

The problem with radar detectors is, you can't hear them at speed when you really need them. Even if they are mounted just over the dash, the lights are not noticable on a sunny day to get your attention when they alert! I mounted a H.A.R.D. system on both my bikes and I love it. That little light in your helmet gets your attention instantly when the detector alerts. I bought a screamer but never mounted it. I'm sure it will work fine but I thought it may be anoying. My set up saves me at least a half dozen tickets a year, maybe more. The Escort X50 will pick up a radar unit well in advance of you seeing the unit. Sometimes it will pick it up miles ahead and you find yourself having doubts there is a radar ahead at all. But that puppy doesn't lie!

Yes it does just great behind the screen, I have the X50 also mounted behind a ZG touring screen and it already saved my bacon many a times. I dont have the H.A.R.D. system but I just use the ear phone jack and that works good for me. Mine is just mounted with the suction cups to the screen, those suckers really hold on well. It's been said that the smoke screens may affect how it recieves a laser hits but that doesnt matter because if you get hit with a laser gun, they got you anyways before the detector can give you enough warning.

Used three inches of Velcro on bottom of the detector for this mount. It's easy to pull off, but doesn't come off on it's own.

Never a problem with my ZG smoke or my current Sportech VFlow in Black chrome.

Like TufBusa said, the only problem is hearing it at speed, but I usually give it a glance every couple seconds....it's saved my ass a few times.

You guys say never a problem, but a Dark screen takes some of the effectiveness away from the detector. The issue is tha it will work just not as well as it can.

okay dumb question.....are these things battery operated or do you need to connect to the busa's battery or something else?

The Escort Passport is cordless, but the effective rangeor sensitivity on the 8500 has been rated number 1 I think.

Mounting it behind any tinted surface will degrade the laser pickup...but as mentioned...if you get hit with laser, you are likely done anyways. There is no detector on the market that can detect laser far enough ahead to give you more than a second...maybe 2 tops...so if you are hauling ass, you're cooked.

In regards to tinting affecting X, K, and Ka...it does not affect it at all. IRRIDIUM coated ones will, or any with a reflective surface, as they are typically a metallic film. That is why in a car, you don't want to mount it way up next to the roof, on the windshield...since most cars have a metallic film that shades the top 2-3 inches...

X, K, and Ka are not "light" like a laser...so it does not get affected by standard tinting...

Keep in mind that motorcycle windshields are MADE tinted...it is not added on afterwards like car tinting...so the 2 are not alike.

What jynx said. He is 100% on target. Also just an fyi radar both laser and RF are effected by rain. Light refracts from water and RF in the higher freq's (like what you need for a speed gun) are reflected by water. So when it's raining cops aren't suppose to use radar dectectors. To bad it's not to smart to go fast in rain.

Wow, thanks for the info, anyone ever use a "stem" mount. Seems like you can pick them up pretty cheap and they look OK.
