I've seen the debates back and forth about using radar detectors, what I'm looking for is feedback from folks that use them and have tinted wind screens. I'm concerned that the tint could impact the effectiveness of the radar detector.

If you use one, can you post what color/style wind screen you have and how effective the detector is vs. using in a car/truck/etc.

Thanks in advance,
Brian

I have run several detectors laser and radar. I have had them tested a couple of times by my local State Trooper. Deep dark tints will keep your unit from working properly. It also needs to be mid height of the scren for best. radar seems to work but I had some of the best units and they don't work all the time. Sees whe the units are new they work and afte a month or so they work less.

I believe the biggest factor in the detectors ability to see through the tint will depend on at least two factors.....
1. is the tinted screen dye based or does it use a metal based tint. the later will greatly impact the detectors ability to function properly.
2. Location, location, location..... NE already hit on this!

My personal experience using Bel, Passport/Escort, and PNI detectors looking through a zero gravity dbl bubble dark tint window (stem stand mounted detector) has been nearly zero impact! All were able to detect KA, K, & X at considerable distances. Lasar was different, I had the best results with an un-obstructed view or using a clear windscreen...... Just my observation, yours may vary!

I totally concur with waterbug. I've used a Bel cordless 946 (alway with fresh batteries) on a stem mount looking through a smoked Zero Gravity double bubble with great results although the Laser functions are theoretically degraded by the smoked wind screen. FYI: Perhaps the hottest new detector is (there's one in my near future)... Click Me

I've been using a Bel cordless 945 mounted with a suction cup mount just above the instruments. I can't say that the warning distances are any different from the windshield of my car. The tinted db windscreen doesn't seem to be a factor, though I prefer to keep it mounted where it doesn't obstruct my vision when tucked in at warp speed. Besides, being a Floridian flatlander, there aren't too many obstructions to mess up the signals.
