Purchase gen 2

+1 what others have said
I'd add being familiar with what a stock Gen2 looks like. These bikes are often heavily modified, and knowing what those mods are can be a helpful guide during the shopping phase, like, for instance:
  • Modified exhaust
  • upgraded brakes (master cylinder, pads, rotors, calipers)
  • Suspension mods
  • rearsets
  • Frame sliders
Questions to ask:
  • Does it include the hump (rear cowl)?
  • Have they done the PAIR valve delete?
  • Has it been dyno'd / flashed ECU? (ask them what they changed in the ECU)
  • handlebar risers?
  • OEM sprockets, or not?
  • Electronic add-ons? (heated grips, etc.)
  • Do they have a service log?
  • What type of oil are they running?
When serious, ask them to pull the fairings to get a better look at components.

Good luck with the search!

This one came from @piratediverjefff & it was built before the available abs , which personally I could do without it *
A few early Gen-1’s had Reg / Rec issues and a recall, a few early ones had clutch bolts work loose. Both should have been fixed long ago.

Most of the Gen-2 is no different to buying any other used bike .

For me….

The 08-12 is the last of the low tech brutes. No ABS.
A fraction lighter, a fraction less clutter, a fraction easier to do braided lines, and maybe a better feel at the lever.

The 13-20 does have Brembo calipers although not modern ones.

The ABS isn’t a big deal, it works but it’s still a quite crude and dated system. Only thing it gets you is a choice of a wider range of newer bikes. I rode several early and late Gen-2’s, then bought a 2011.
Gen 2's had the rectifier and clutch bolt issues. I bought a very nice 2008 a couple years ago, and found the rectifier recall had not been done so I had the local shop complete it. It was a challenge for them to figure out if it needed it and how to get the part ordered.
