Also here is a great place to order quality electronic components from for projects. They are awesome and they dont care if you just order one .15 cent resistor... Radio Shack is Garbage.. Order quality electronic components and you wont short or ruin your project.
what exactly are you looking to power because you also have to look at the size of the fuse thats inside of the adapter just because its a 5v adapter doesnt mean that its the right amperage because some adapters are REALLY low amperage
USB devices use 5 volts.
A car cellphone charger will have a voltage regulator in it. Take one apart and hard wire the electronics to your application.
Griffin makes a very small cig to USB adapter that is rated at 1 amp. It is called powerjolt dual. $5.00 on eBay. I ordered 2 about 2 hours ago.
They are tiny and you should be able to easily break it down.
