(04/19/12) - A bizarre twist to a deadly accident involving a motorcycle and a tanker truck on I-69 in Genesee County.
Early reports indicated there was just one motorcyclist, the victim, a 34-year-old Flint Township man. A witness in a red pick truck has led Flint Township police to believe there were two motorcyclists involved in a deadly crash claiming the life of a 34-year-old Flint Township man.
"Those motorcyclists split up and drove around a red pick up truck. One motorcyclist cut out in front, the second was coming from behind," said Lt. Tim Jones.
Investigators said it appears the riders were merging on to eastbound I-69 from the northbound I-75 ramp, when a second rider slammed into the side of this tanker truck.
"He thought he had a flat tire, all he heard was a loud bang. It appears the motorcyclist ran into the side of the truck and got caught underneath," said Sgt. Randy Kimes.
"The first one that waves to the other, who is now our victim, leaves the scene of an accident, never stops, he just continues on. So what we are asking is for the public to help us find out what happened, we need his side of the story," added Lt. Jones.
Lt. Tim Jones said he assumes the motorcyclists know one another and that driver who left the scene can help the investigation and provide closure to the victim's family.
"If he may have not seen the accident, at one point, you're going to ask, where's my friend at."
Lt. Jones confirms the rider was wearing a helmet.
